When Mario or Luigi obtains a Fire Flower, they transform into Fiery Mario or Fiery Luigi. In this form, they can shoot fireballs which can defeat many enemies. The Flower first appeared in Super Mario Bros., which could be found in an ? Block if you had already obtained a Super Mushroom.

In Super Mario 64 DS, a similar flower known as a Power Flower will give either Mario, Luigi, Wario or Yoshi a special power, which would originally be gained by wearing a special cap in Super Mario 64.
