- This article is about the flying move performed in various games. For Charizard's special move in the Super Smash Bros. series, see Fly (Pokémon). For the similar Super Smash Bros. Brawl technique, see Glide. For the Mario Bros. enemy, see Fighter Fly.
Flying is a move that is directly related to jumping. It allows the player to float in the air for a certain period of time. While characters like Mario need a power-up to fly, certain enemies like Fly Guys and Paragoombas can fly without the aid of items.
History
Super Mario series
Super Mario Bros. Special
The first game where Mario is able to fly is the remake to Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. Special. The Wing power-up allows him to fly through the air in a manner similar to the game's swimming mechanics.
Super Mario Bros. 2
In Super Mario Bros. 2, When Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool or Toad defeat Pidgit, they are able to use its Magic Carpet to fly for a short time.
Super Mario Bros. 3
In Super Mario Bros. 3, when the player picks up a Super Leaf, they transform into Raccoon Mario, and are then able to briefly fly after getting a running start. The Tanooki Suit, a similar item, turns them into Tanooki Mario, allowing them not only to fly, but also to turn themselves into a statue. P-Wings let Raccoon Mario fly indefinitely until he takes damage or grabs a non-flight-based power-up; clearing the level reverts his flying ability back to normal.
Super Mario World
In Super Mario World, the player can pick up a Cape Feather to turn into Cape Mario, which gives them the ability to fly. In the same game, if a Blue Yoshi ridden by the player eats a Koopa Shell, the dinosaur gains his Winged Yoshi form and is then able to fly around. Alternately, the same result can be achieved with any other Yoshi, if the Yoshi eats a Blue Shell or grabs Yoshi's Wings. The player can also steal Lakitu's Cloud, which also allows them to fly for a while.
Super Mario 64 / Super Mario 64 DS
In Super Mario 64, Mario can break open red ! Blocks to obtain the Wing Cap, which allows him to fly for a limited time after he performs a Triple Jump or uses a Cannon to take off.
In Super Mario 64 DS, the Wing Cap is replaced by a feather, which is a Power Up exclusive to Mario. Only in the VS mode of this version is every character able to fly.
New Super Mario Bros.
In New Super Mario Bros., the player gains the ability to fly after defeating Lakitu with a Fire Flower, who then yields his cloud to the player. The player can also fly for a short amount of time using the Spin Block.
Super Mario Galaxy
In Super Mario Galaxy, flying returns. The player can collect the Red Star to become Flying Mario. The player must jump and then spin in midair to begin flying for a limited time.
Another way to fly is by collecting a Bee Mushroom, which turns the player into Bee Mario. The player's flight is limited by their fly meter, changing color from green, to yellow, and finally to red as they fly. Once the bar is empty, they fall and are unable to fly until the flight meter fills up, which occurs by landing on a stable surface or by collecting Coins). The Boo Mushroom, which transforms the player into Boo Mario, also grants the ability to float in the air while pressing . Whenever the player goes through a Launch Star, he goes into an automated flight.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, the player is able to fly after obtaining a Propeller Mushroom and shaking the Wii Remote. The player can also use Lakitu's cloud to fly around for a while.
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Flight returns in Super Mario Galaxy 2, in the same way as it appeared in Super Mario Galaxy, with the exception of the Red Star. Yoshi can also fly in this game by using the Blimp Berry to hover for a certain amount of time.
New Super Mario Bros. 2
In New Super Mario Bros. 2, Raccoon Mario and the Super Leaf return, as does the ability to steal Lakitu's Cloud.
New Super Mario Bros. U
In New Super Mario Bros. U, the player can obtain a Super Acorn to transform into Flying Squirrel Mario. This allows him to glide, similar to Raccoon Mario or Cape Mario. He can also obtain a P Acorn to transform into P Flying Squirrel Mario. This grants him the abilities as the Super Acorn, but without the need to touch the ground to continue flying.
Wario: Master of Disguise
In Wario: Master of Disguise, Wario can turn into Wicked Wario. The player must then blow into the Microphone to make him fly.
