Each course in Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition has a certain configuration of Orbs on the Orb field. All six types of Orbs can appear at once, though some courses may disable elemental Orbs or even Heart Orbs. This page lists all course types, with all combinations of Orb configurations.
3-Color[edit]
3-Color Courses have three elemental Orbs alongside Heart Orbs on the Orb field. They are the easiest course types to make Combos with, and players can take advantage of the Yoshis' Helper Skills to raise their party's ATK by 3x with little difficulty. Boo Mario and Boo Luigi can also benefit from this course type if the player lacks the proper Yoshi color, or the available Orb attributes can't be covered by any of the Yoshis.
4-Color[edit]
4-Color Courses have four elemental Orbs on the Orb field. This course type is more difficult to make Combos with than 3-Color Course types. Players can take advantage of the Winged Yoshis' Helper Skills to raise their party's ATK by 4x with little difficulty. Statue Luigi and Rosalina can also be effective for this course type if the player has yet to acquire the Winged Yoshis.
Heartless[edit]
Heartless Courses have no Heart Orbs on the Orb field whatsoever. There may either be four elemental Orbs on the Orb Field or all of them -- there are no 3-Color Heartless Courses. Since Heart Orbs do not count towards an attribute total, players that use an offensive play style may find these course types easier as there are no Heart Orbs in the way to make Combos with.
4-Color[edit]
5-Color[edit]
Cat Luigi and Super Rosalina are at their most effective in the 5-Color Heartless Courses, as they can properly utilize their Leader/Helper Skill without any Heart Orb interference.
Normal[edit]
Normal Courses have all Orb types on the field. They are the most difficult course type to make Combos with, especially when trying to activate skills that require multiple Orb types to be cleared. Boomerang Mario and Boomerang Luigi are at their best in this course type, as their Leader/Helper Skill involves clearing all Orb types, including Heart Orbs, to get the best possible damage multiplier.
