Curlups are armadillo-esque enemies in Mario & Luigi: Brothership. Their name is a pun on "curl up." They are found on Heatfreeze Island, where some are sleeping. Curlups that are awake roll at Mario and Luigi if they are near. Curlups have brown backs and yellow bellies, as well as short limbs, a red nose and yellow eyes. Some Curlups are infected with Glohm, becoming Glohm Curlups. A stronger, non-Glohmed Curlup, known as a Curlup R, appears on Petit Islet in a side quest.
Battle
If a sleeping Curlup is encountered, it will start the battle sleeping, unable to perform any action. If they are attacked in this state, even from First Strikes, they will awaken and turn red with rage, boosting their POW by 30%.
Curlups have two attacks:
- They can roll up and leap high into the air a few times, creating shockwaves with each impact. The Bros. must jump over the shockwaves to avoid damage. The Curlup can jump to different locations during the attack, which changes the timing for jumping over the shockwaves.
- Curlups can also roll directly at Mario or Luigi. The brothers must use their hammers to counter. If the Curlup is countered, it will roll to the other Bro. Once the other brother defends, the attack will end. If the Curlup rolls into Mario or Luigi, they will be launched off the screen and will not return for a few turns (unless the opposite Bro. fell in battle); if that Bro. is the only Bro., the opposite Bro. instead rejoins the fight.
