This article is under construction. Therefore, please excuse its informal appearance while it is being worked on. We hope to have it completed as soon as possible.
Bonds, first introduced in Mario & Luigi: Brothership, refer to powerful emotional connections between people, born from their mutual care and understanding of each other. Forming and strengthening Bonds could produce Connectar, allowing the Uni-Tree to flourish and guide the Shipshape Island to create more Bonds. The power of exceptionally strong Bonds can act as a direct counter to Reclusa's influence.
History
Background
Under the control of Reclusa, Zokket destroyed the Uni-Tree, fracturing the land of Concordia, which renders maintaining connections between people substantially more difficult, severing many Bonds across the land. To fight this, the Great Conductor uses the last of Connectar he holds to summon people with especially strong Bonds in the Mushroom Kingdom to various corners of Concordia, in hopes that they would become the saviors of Concordia.
Mario & Luigi: Brothership
Throughout the game, Mario and Luigi's primary objective is to re-establish Bonds between the floating islands, and, by extension, their inhabitants. These Bonds would then empower the Uni-Tree on Shipshape Island, reconnecting closed currents and guide the Bros. to restore more of Concordia.
There is also a toxic substance called Glohm, which causes those poisoned by it to forget about any Bonds they have had with someone else and seek isolation. Known victims of this substance include Prince Chilliam of Slippenglide, a guard on Bulbfish Island, and Buddy.
After Reclusa took over Fortress Zokket and turned it into the Soli-Tree, Cozette task the brothers to take her Bonding Can and fill it with seven powerful Bonds in order to penetrate the barrier around the Soli-Tree. After it is filled with the potent power of Bonds, Connie showers the Bros. with it, allowing them to infiltrate the Soli-Tree. The Bonds needed are gathered from the following people:
- Connie and Cozette.
- Burnadette and Chilliam on Skorcheen Island.
- Willma, Billdit, Maykit, and Gorumbla on Rumbla Island.
- The IDLE group including Princess Peach and Starlow, collected on Shipshape Island after finding the group on different islets.
- Dyode and Emmit, collected when Mario and Luigi perform with them on Twistee Island, Merrygo Island, and Jellyfish Island.
- Bowser Jr. and Buddy on Offandon Island.
- The Extension Corps on Slippenglide Island.
After the first battle against Reclusa, the Mario Bros. fell victim to Weeping Reclusa's Glohm fog, unable to fight further. However, with Connie once again imbuing them with the power stored inside the Bonding Can, the were able to dispel the fog to keep pursuing their foe, and eventually use that power to eliminate Reclusa.
