King Totomesu is the first boss in the game Super Mario Land. He is a large Gao with improved jumping and fire breathing capabilities. During Tatanga's invasion of Sarasaland, the alien invader placed King Totomesu in charge of the Birabuto Kingdom, the first world of Sarasaland. As such, King Totomesu had the important task of not only protecting his kingdom, but also protecting the entrance to the Muda Kingdom.
In battle, King Totomesu attacks by attempting to jump on and shoot fire at Mario. To defeat King Totomesu, Mario had to wait for King Totomesu to jump and dash to activate the switch behind him (like Bowser in Super Mario Bros.) or simply shoot 5 superballs at the sphinx. Either way, Mario was awarded 5000 points for defeating King Totomesu and was allowed to progress into the Muda Kingdom. After King Totomesu was defeated, Mario liberated the Birabuto Kingdom. King Totomesu is most likely the leader of Gaos. In appearance, King Totomesu resembles a pyramid sphinx.
