Ragumo[1] are enemies first appearing in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. These drill-nosed mole creatures are likely based on Monty Moles due to their similar appearance and attack pattern and may be related to them,[2][3] but they are considerably slower.

History

Super Mario Land 2: Golden Coins

In Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, Ragumo appear exclusively in the Tree Zone's Roots Course and can be found in low-lying areas, such as pits or ditches. To attack, the Ragumo will burrow underground and attempt to pop up in Mario's path. However, Mario can swiftly jump before the Ragumo pops up, thus landing a hit on its head. Fireballs can also be effective to defeat it, but only when the Ragumo has surfaced.

Super Mario-kun

Ragumo only appear in two volumes of Super Mario-kun.

A Ragumo appears in the final chapter of volume 6, where when Mario enters the Tree Zone, he and his Carrot are ambushed by the Ragumo. Mario tries luring the Ragumo with his Carrot but the Carrot kicks him in the air. Mario then proceeds to attempt throwing fireballs at the Ragumo, but it pops up on the other side. A Bopping Toady helps the Ragumo by pinning Mario down using its tongue. The Carrot tries helping Mario but it is quickly destroyed when the Ragumo drills through it. The Ragumo then attempts to drill through Mario, but Mario uses his Bunny Ears to try and stop the Ragumo's drill. As the Ragumo drills, Mario spots a Mushroom that he uses to power up his Bunny Ears to break the Ragumo's drill and slap the Bopping Toady. The Ragumo resembles a Monty Mole in this volume.

A Ragumo cameos in volume 10 as one of the enemies Luigi recruits to defeat Wario. The Ragumo's design in this volume looks more faithful to its artwork from Super Mario Land 2.

Ragumo appear throughout the Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins arc of the Super Mario Kodansha manga.

In the first Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins volume, several Ragumo emerge out of the ground and surround Mario, Peach, and a friendly Battle Beetle, alongside the other Tree Zone inhabitants. However, Mario eats a Carrot to become Bunny Mario to escape from the Tree Zone enemies while carrying his friends. Much later, a Ragumo can be seen in one of the tunnels in the Macro Zone's first area, despite never appearing in Macro Zone in the game.

In the third Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins volume, a Ragumo can be seen as one of the several enemies that Mario and Luigi quickly pass by on their way to Wario Castle. Later on, a Ragumo, alongside other Tree Zone inhabitants, can be briefly seen as Wario announces his plan.
