Cloud Lifts, also simply called clouds,[1][2][3][4] are objects in the Super Mario series. These semisolid lifts are movable platforms in most games except Yoshi's Story and Super Mario Bros. Wonder, where they are stationary.
History[edit]
Super Mario series[edit]
Super Mario Bros. / Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels[edit]
Cloud Lifts debut in Super Mario Bros., where they appear in Bonus Stages, first seen in World 2-1. They are initially stationary, but landing on one will cause it to travel to the right indefinitely. In Hard Mode, they are smaller. They reappear in Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, which features the smaller versions in Worlds A-D. In Super Mario All-Stars, Cloud Lifts have a smiling face similar to Cloud Blocks and are animated. Unlike in later games, the Cloud Lifts here are solid.
Super Mario Bros. 3[edit]
In Super Mario Bros. 3, moving Cloud Lifts appear only in World 6-2. There, they move to the left and are the main mode of transportation in that level. In other cloud-themed levels, static Cloud Lifts appear as part of the foreground.
Super Mario Land 2 - 6 Golden Coins[edit]
In Super Mario Land 2 - 6 Golden Coins, several clouds appear in the final level of the Tree Zone, Final Boss: The Big Bird. These lifts have blinking eyes and simply move back and forth.
Super Mario Sunshine[edit]
In Super Mario Sunshine, Cloud Lifts can be seen in the episodes The Sand Bird is Born in Gelato Beach and Fluff Festival Coin Hunt in Pianta Village, and at the end of Corona Mountain. Mario can phase through from below and walk on top of it. In the first stages, they serve as platforms where some normal coins as well as some Red Coins can be found. Spraying them causes them to flatten out and become wider in all directions. In the final stage, they function as the "stairway" leading to the final boss.
Super Mario Galaxy[edit]
In Super Mario Galaxy, clouds are platforms that commonly appear in galaxies with Bee Mushrooms. When Mario (or Luigi) stands on a cloud, it begins shrinking rapidly and soon disappears, respawning eventually. Bee Mario is able to stand on clouds without them disappearing. Clouds can be Ground Pounded through. In "When It Rains, It Pours", gray clouds appear that generate rain. Touching this rain as Bee Mario removes the form, putting Mario in his regular form. Bee Mario is able stand on these rain clouds. Some of these clouds move, while others are stationary.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit]
While Cloud Lifts do not appear in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Bouncy Clouds that act as a substitute are introduced.
Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]
In Super Mario Galaxy 2, clouds appear as platforms primarily in the Fluffy Bluff Galaxy, the Cloudy Court Galaxy, and the Starshine Beach Galaxy. They behave the same to how they did in Super Mario Galaxy, though sometimes have a more cubic shape. Cloud Mario can also stand on clouds without them disappearing, and Cloud Mario can create clouds platforms himself. The Boomsday Machine is able to vacuum clouds.
New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[edit]
In New Super Mario Bros. U, Cloud Lifts are long platforms that move to the right when initially landed on. Several of them appear in Land of Flying Blocks.
New Super Luigi U[edit]
In New Super Luigi U, only one Cloud Lift appears in the level Bowser Jr. Showdown. It works the same as it does in New Super Mario Bros. U. Luigi and/or the others start the level jumping on top of it. It has an Arrow Sign on top of it, and it cannot be destroyed by the Mecha Hand.
Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[edit]
In Super Mario 3D World and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, they are usually still, though some move horizontally or vertically. Some Cloud Lifts are invisible and can be seen only by ground-pounding near them or shaking the Wii U GamePad.
Super Mario Maker 2[edit]
Cloud Lifts reappear in Super Mario Maker 2, where they can be used exclusively in the Super Mario 3D World game style. They replace Lifts and Flimsy Lifts from the other game styles. Like Lifts and Flimsy Lifts, their length can be changed. They can move vertically or horizontally in all four cardinal directions.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder / Super Mario Bros. Wonder – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park[edit]
In Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Cloud Lifts have a smiling face design and are stationary, acting as wider versions of Cloud Blocks. The large cloud used by the Lakitu trio looks like a big version of it.
In Super Mario Bros. Wonder – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park, Cloud Lifts are created by Ludwig in his Wonder form in his final phase. The player must traverse them to stomp Ludwig. They can move either horizontally or vertically.
Yoshi's Story[edit]
In Yoshi's Story, Cloud Lifts are stationary platforms that come in large, medium, and small sizes. They are common floating objects in outdoor levels.
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker[edit]
Cloud Lifts reappear in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker and its Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS ports of the same name, reusing their appearance from Super Mario 3D World. They appear primarily in Twisty-Turny Planet where a large cloud acts as a platform with several Cloud Lifts surrounding it, as well as the Toad Brigade levels. In the Special Episode, they also appear in Boo Spotting at Darkly Cove, Flip Panel Panic, and Crown Capture in Wandering Woods.
Mario Strikers: Battle League[edit]
In Mario Strikers: Battle League, Cloud Lifts appear as goal-line decorations in the Strikers Club customization options for Mushroom Hill, with a Vine growing through them. Additionally, Cloud Lifts appear surrounding the largest version of the stadium as well.
