Typically, Koopa Paratroopas are placed in large gaps where [[Mario]] and [[Luigi]] must stomp on rows of them to traverse a pit or reap other rewards. They traditionally come in two varieties: Red Koopa Paratroopas usually fly up and down in a set path, while Green Koopa Paratroopas often bounce in the player's general direction or fly back and forth, although many exceptions have been made to these rules. Red Koopa Paratroopas first appear in World 1-3 of ''[[Super Mario Bros.]]'', while the green ones first appear in World 2-1 of the same game. Koopa Paratroopas have also appeared as playable characters in various spin-off installments, occasionally even appearing without a normal Koopa Troopa as a playable character; in these installments, the red Paratroopas are the default color, having appeared first, and the green Paratroopas are the alternate color, having appeared later. Their name comes from "paratrooper," a term used in the military to describe soldiers who parachute down to attack.

Template:Quote2 Koopa Paratroopas (also known as Para-Koopas, Sky Troopas in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Koopa Flying Troopers[1], or simply Paratroopas) are winged Koopa Troopas. They lose their wings when they are stomped in the air, turning them into regular Koopa Troopas. Typically, Koopa Paratroopas are placed in large gaps where Mario and Luigi must stomp on rows of them to traverse a pit or reap other rewards. They traditionally come in two varieties: Red Koopa Paratroopas usually fly up and down in a set path, while Green Koopa Paratroopas often bounce in the player's general direction or fly back and forth, although many exceptions have been made to these rules. Koopa Paratroopas also appear as playable characters in various spin-off games, occasionally even appearing without a normal Koopa Troopa as a playable character; in these installments, the red Paratroopas are the default color, having appeared first, and the green Paratroopas are the alternate color, having appeared later. Their name comes from "paratrooper," a term used in the military to describe soldiers who parachute down to attack.

Super Mario series

Koopa Paratroopas debut in Super Mario Bros., counting their remakes and ports (including Super Mario Bros. Deluxe and Super Mario All-Stars), behaving as flying Koopa Troopas. They lose their wings and turn into normal Koopa Troopas if Mario or Luigi jump on them. They come in two different varieties, each having its own attack pattern: green Koopa Paratroopas (which are colored teal in underground and castle-themed levels) either fly left and right or bounce around, and red Koopa Paratroopas fly up and down. In this game, red Koopa Paratroopas first appear in World 1-3, while green Koopa Paratroopas first appear in World 2-1. Due to a possible programming oversight, red Koopa Paratroopas that lose their wings walk off ledges as if they are green Koopa Troopas.

Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels

In Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, Koopa Paratroopas are a very common enemy, and in some levels even more common than Koopa Troopas or Goombas. Both the green and red varieties return from the original Super Mario Bros. and behave in a similar way. They also appear in certain water levels, where they cannot be stomped. In these instances, however, green Koopa Paratroopas are recolored gray due to palette limitations (they are colored normally in Super Mario All-Stars; similarly, the gray Cheep Cheeps are now colored green). In this game, red Koopa Paratroopas first appear in World 1-3, while green Koopa Paratroopas first appear in World 1-1, being one of the first enemies encountered. World 7-3 is the only level in the original game where green Paratroopas actually fly, while all other green Paratroopas simply hop. Some levels require the player to jump off Koopa Paratroopas in midair in order to cross large voids that cannot be done within the player's jumping range, even with a long jump.

Super Mario Bros. 3 / Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3

While Koopa Paratroopas do appear in Super Mario Bros. 3 and its remakes, they are not very common, unlike in most other 2D sidescrolling games. They act as they did in Super Mario Bros., and their first appearance is in World 1-1. In Giant Land, green Colossal Koopa Paratroopas replace regular Koopa Paratroopas, but they only hop on the ground, like regular green Koopa Paratroopas. Additionally, an item called the P-Wing, meant to be a Paratroopa's wing, allows Mario or Luigi to fly in Raccoon form indefinitely for one level.

Koopa Paratroopas, also known here as Winged Koopa Troopas[2][3] or Flying Koopa Troopas,[4] reappear in Super Mario World and its remake, Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2, also having the updated design of the Koopa Troopas, as they are now bipedal rather than quadrupedal. In this game, many of them are capable of flight instead of simply hopping, including all red varieties and certain green Koopa Paratroopas. They still lose their wings when jumped on by Mario or Luigi. If Mario or Luigi jumps on them while riding Yoshi, they are defeated in a single stomp. Koopa Paratroopas are first encountered in Yoshi's Island 3. When players unlock Fall, all Koopas wear Mario masks rather than shells, including Koopa Paratroopas.

Green-shelled Koopa Paratroopas either jump in one direction, some jumping higher than others, or fly in one direction, while the red-shelled Koopa Paratroopas fly back and forth horizontally or vertically, though some fly horizontally across the screen in one direction. Even though blue-shelled Koopas and yellow-shelled Koopas are introduced in this game, only the yellow-shelled Koopas have a winged variant. Yellow-shelled Koopa Paratroopas walk like regular Koopas, but they chase after Mario and jump over any shells that are in their way, though they do not jump over shells moving from behind them. Jumping on them gets rid of their wings and turn them into regular yellow-shelled Koopas. Yellow-shelled Koopa Paratroopas only appear in the Special Zone courses Awesome and Funky, making them very rare enemies.

New Super Mario Bros.

Artwork of a Koopa Paratroopa in New Super Mario Bros. (later used in Mario Super Sluggers, New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Super Mario Run)
Artwork of a Koopa Paratroopa for New Super Mario Bros.

Koopa Paratroopas make an appearance as a common enemy in New Super Mario Bros., reprising their general role and attack pattern from the previous Super Mario platforming games. Unlike in Super Mario Bros., both colors (red and green) can bounce towards players, in addition to their flying abilities. Unlike Koopa Troopas, they do not move to the music. Koopa Paratroopas are first encountered in World 1-4.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii

GreenParatroopa.png NSMBW Red Paratroopa Render.png
Two types of Koopa Paratroopas from New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Koopa Paratroopas reappear in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Here, they have the same attack pattern as the previous games. Unlike its predecessor, Koopa Paratroopas move to the music while flying. Like the predecessor, only green and red Paratroopas appear. However, unlike in Super Mario World, whenever Yoshi jumps on a Koopa Paratroopa, it simply loses its wings, instead of being defeated instantly, but a ground pound instantly defeats it. Koopa Paratroopas appear later than they do in New Super Mario Bros., first appearing at the very end of World 1-4. They may also appear in Magikoopa's boss fight, as he can use his magic to transform platforms into Koopa Paratroopas.

New Super Mario Bros. 2

Artwork of a Golden Koopa Paratroopa from New Super Mario Bros. 2
A golden Koopa Paratroopa from New Super Mario Bros. 2

Paratroopas reappear in New Super Mario Bros. 2, acting the same as in previous games. Green Paratroopas are more common in this game, as they can now travel in circles and not just horizontal or vertical lines, as red ones only appear in a few levels. As in most sidescrolling platformers, they make their first appearance in the first athletic level of the game, being World 1-3.

New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Luigi U

Both red and green Paratroopas reappear in New Super Mario Bros. U and its expansion, New Super Luigi U, acting the same as in previous games. They appear much later than they normally do, making their first appearance in World 2 of the game, Layer Cake Desert, in the first level, Stone-Eye Zone. In New Super Luigi U, they first appear much later in the game, in Soda Jungle's Dancing Blocks, Poison Swamp.

Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury

While Paratroopas do not appear in Super Mario 3D World and its Nintendo Switch port Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, a dry version is introduced. They are the only flying sub-species of Koopa Troopa to appear in a 3D platformer, even before the standard Paratroopa. Unlike Paratroopas, their wings also reassemble after they get hit, like their other counterparts, the Dry Bones.

Super Mario Maker / Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS / Super Mario Maker 2

Koopa Paratroopas are usable enemies in Super Mario Maker, its Nintendo 3DS port, and Super Mario Maker 2, just like in past 2D Super Mario platformers. They can be created by combining a Koopa Troopa with a pair of wings. Green Paratroopas continuously leap on the ground in a zig-zag pattern, while the Paratroopas of red variety fly up and down on a vertical route. The player can enlarge Koopa Paratroopas by dragging a Super Mushroom onto them to turn them into Big Koopa Paratroopas (which can also be made by putting wings on a Big Koopa Troopa).

Super Mario Run

Red Koopa Paratroopas appear in Super Mario Run, reprising their role as they had in the 2D Super Mario platforming games. Koopa Paratroopas can either fly up and down, or back and forth.

Super Mario Bros.: Peach-hime Kyūshutsu Dai Sakusen!

In Super Mario Bros.: Peach-hime Kyūshutsu Dai Sakusen!, several Paratroopas appear flying out of Mario's television when he is playing Family Computer at the beginning of the film. Later, a colossal-sized Paratroopa makes a more prominent appearance, as the parent of three chicks.

The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!

Template:Quote2

Four Koopa Paratroopas from The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! episode "King Mario of Cramalot"

In The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, Koopa Paratroopas make only two appearances, in the episodes "King Mario of Cramalot" and "Princess, I Shrunk the Mario Brothers". In "King Mario of Cramalot", they drop a net on top of Mario, Luigi, Toad, Princess Toadstool and Mervin. The Koopa Paratroopas are based off the show's Koopa Troopa design, except that they are depicted in shades of red while having wings similar to a bee's, rather than their usual feathered ones. Much like the Koopa Troopas that appeared in that same episode, the Koopa Paratroopas are dressed up as knights to fit the medieval setting of Cramalot. In "Princess, I Shrunk the Mario Brothers", when the Koopa Troopas are shrunk, one that is jumping has a pair of wings.

Additionally, in "Flatbush Koopa", after falling off a roller coaster and into Lower New York Bay, a Koopa Troopa mutters that he wishes that he had joined the Paratroopas, claiming that they have received parachutes.

The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3

Koopa Paratroopa
Several Koopa Paratroopas, along with some Paragoombas, from The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 episode "Do the Koopa"

Koopa Paratroopas have a very brief cameo in The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 episode "Do the Koopa", where several of them can be seen dancing along with a few Paragoombas in the Doomship's cargo hold. Unlike the Koopa Paratroopas from The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, these ones are redesigned to better resemble their in-game counterparts. Standard Koopa Troopas never appear on the show.

Super Mario World: Mario to Yoshi no Bōken Land

In the interactive OVA Super Mario World: Mario to Yoshi no Bōken Land, after Iggy's horde of Koopa Troopas, Rexes, and Chargin' Chucks is defeated by Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi, he summons a group of Koopa Paratroopas and Monty Moles. They are quickly disposed of when Yoshi swallows a Green Shell and breathes fire on them.

Club Nintendo

A Koopa Paratroopa also appear in the Club Nintendo comic "Marios Rückkehr" where it collides with Raccoon Mario, causing him to turn to normal Mario.

Nintendo Adventure Books

Luigi can fight some Koopa Paratroopas while ascending a flight of stairs (which lead to Wendy O. Koopa's secret camp) in the Magma Pits in Koopa Capers.

Super Mario Adventures

Koopa Paratroopas make a few appearances throughout Super Mario Adventures. A few green and red ones can be seen in the onslaught at the beginning of the story. Later, after recapturing Princess Peach, Bowser sends some Paratroopas, mostly red and green ones, to attack the Mario Bros. (Luigi curiously mistakes calls them Mecha-Koopas.) Mario manages to fight off the Paratroopas while Yoshi eats them until he eats a blue Koopa Troopa and gains wings.

Yoshi's Safari

Koopa Paratroopas (parsed Koopa Para Troopas[5]) appear in Yoshi's Safari and approach the player in groups, hovering up and down a bit as they move closer to the screen. Koopa Para Troopas can be taken down with one shot from the Super Scope and the player earns 150 points (300 in Hard Mode). Koopa Para Troopas come in four colors - green, yellow, blue, and pink - but their behavior is the same. There is a discrepancy on the box art, where they are depicted as barefooted, but have shoes in-game.

Yoshi's Island series

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island / Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3

Chronologically, Koopa Paratroopa's first appearance is in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and its remake, Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3, though they are called Para-Koopas.[6] They are basic enemies in this game, alongside the Koopa Troopas, and they both first appear in the level Visit Koopa And Para-Koopa. There are two varieties: red and green-shelled. As in Super Mario World, the red variety flies back and forth on a set path, while the green ones can only hop towards the player. As in other games, stomping on them causes their wings to fall off and turns them into regular Koopa Troopas. Yoshis cannot swallow Para-Koopas, but like regular Koopas, they can spit them back out to make them slide across the ground in their shells, defeating enemies in their path. Eating them also makes them lose their wings. Para-Koopas are very common in this game, sometimes even more common than Koopa Troopas.

Yoshi's Island DS

Koopa Paratroopas, again known as Para-Koopas,[7] reappear in Yoshi's Island DS. They act as a common enemy along with the Koopa Troopas. As in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, they exist in two different colors and attack in the same way they did in that game. In the Island Museum, Para-Koopas appear in the Ground Exhibit, the same area where the Koopas appear in. Their appearance is similar to that of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, but they possess a much lighter outline, and they are slightly larger. The level icon for Rock 'n' Fall features a Para-Koopa, which is additionally the first level they appear in.

Yoshi’s New Island

Koopa Paratroopas reappear in Yoshi’s New Island, acting the same way as they do in Yoshi's Island. They first appear in Koopa Canyon.

Hotel Mario

Flying Koopa

Koopa Paratroopas, known as Flying Koopas,[8] make an appearance in Hotel Mario. They only have green shells, and are introduced in Lemmy's High-ate Regency Hotel, flying in a diagonal motion. Unlike Banzai Bills, they bounce off the edge of the screen, making them somewhat aggressive foes. They have a tougher variation called the Z Koopa.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Koopa Paratroopas appear in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and its remake; in the former, they are named "Sky Troopas", while in the latter, they were renamed back to simply "Paratroopas". They appear in the levels Mushroom Way, Bandit's Way, and Booster Pass. In this game, all Paratroopas have red shells and do not lose their wings when hit. These shells give Paratroopas a high defense rating compared to other enemies fought early in the game. Additionally, Paratroopas use their shells for offense. To attack, they hide in their shells and then ram into their opponent.

In Mushroom Way, some Paratroopas guard treasure boxes while others actively pursue Mario. One Paratroopa even kidnaps Toad. In battle, Paratroopas either fight alone or in pairs. At Mushroom Way and in Booster Pass, Paratroopas also aid Spikeys in battle if the Spikeys are attacked. Four Paratroopas can be fought in Bandit's Way while Mario chases Croco through the last area of the level. They fly high in the sky and do not actively pursue Mario, therefore he has to jump if he wants to fight them. After Croco is defeated, these Paratroopas disappear and do not return for the rest of the game.

One prominent Paratroopa featured in the game is Sergeant Flutter, a reformed Koopa who leads a large squad of friendly Paratroopas. These Paratroopas help out Mario in his quest for the Star Pieces at the behest of Monstermama, the leader of Monstro Town. These Paratroopas assist Mario in ascending the steep cliff located at the end of Land's End, allowing him to reach Bean Valley and eventually Nimbus Land. Mario accomplishes this by jumping from Paratroopa to Paratroopa, each Paratroopa carrying Mario higher into the air and into closer proximity to the next Paratroopa. If Mario scales the cliff quickly by bypassing the normal sequence of Paratroopa hops, he is rewarded with prizes.

The Paratroopa has a bulky relative called a Big Troopa, which in turn are related to the Grand Troopas. Paratroopas also have stronger relatives called Malakoopas. These Paratroopas have a green shell instead of a red shell. Standard Koopa Troopas are absent from the game.

The original localized name of the Paratroopas was reused in the Nintendo Switch version as one of the wrong answers to one of Dr. Topper's quiz questions.

Game & Watch Gallery series

Koopa Paratroopas (called Para Troopas in the cast credits but addressed by their normal name in the manual) appear as enemies in some of the Modern iterations of minigames featured in Game & Watch Gallery 2. In Helmet, in the first area, the player needs to dodge a Para Troopa throwing hammers, Spiked Balls, and Podoboos at the player. In Vermin, a Yoshi is defending Yoshi Eggs from invasive enemies, with one of those enemies being Para Troopas. Para Troopas, alongside Koopas, make an appearance as enemies in Donkey Kong.

In Game & Watch Gallery 4, a Para Troopa occasionally appears in the background of the Modern version of Fire. Para Troopas also reprise their role in Donkey Kong.

Mario Tennis series

Mario Tennis (Nintendo 64)

Koopa Paratroopa
Paratroopa in Mario Power Tennis

Paratroopa has been a playable character in some games of the Mario Tennis series. Its first playable role was in the Nintendo 64 version of Mario Tennis. Here, Paratroopa is classified as a Tricky character, meaning that its shots have a high curve and spin to them to mess up opponents. However, Paratroopa serves from low reach, which means that it has trouble reaching balls. When Paratroopa loses, it loses its wings and becomes a normal Koopa Troopa. In the game's intro, Paratroopa participates in the tournament and loses to Luigi, allowing him to advance to a semi-finals match against Princess Peach.

Mario Power Tennis

Paratroopa returns as an unlockable technique player in the sequel, Mario Power Tennis, changing from its original typing. Instead, Paratroopa relies on hitting the ball with more accuracy and control. Paratroopa is moderately fast with the longest lunge in the game; however, it suffers from very low reach as it had in the Nintendo 64 game, Mario Tennis. Its offensive Power Shot is Energy Ball, which creates a large lob and tornado around the opponent who hits it, causing the opponent to spin out of control; this Power Shot is also able to catch lobs, unlike most Power Shots. Sky Dive is its defensive Power Shot, where it flies up into the sky and crash lands towards where the ball is. Paratroopa is unlocked when players clear all World Open cups in Doubles. Paratroopa makes an appearance on the last, Star tournament cleared blooper reel in the credits, where it accidentally wanders onto the scene, causing Wario, Waluigi, and Bowser to look at it; this causes all characters on the scene to start laughing after they have realized what happened.

After completing a singles tournament, the ceremony shows Paratroopa trying to grab the trophy from Waluigi, but his shell is attached to a fishing pole by Wario. As Peach is present and is standing back, Toad appears with a huge pair of scissors and cuts the rope, causing Wario to fall backwards and Paratroopa to ram into Waluigi, who fumbles the trophy. Paratroopa rushes for the trophy, takes it with gratitude, and hoists it while in the air as Peach claps.

Koopa Paratroopas appear in Mario Tennis Aces in both playable and non-playable capacities. While they can appear as audience members on various stages, a red Koopa Paratroopa reappears as a playable character, available in the game's version 2.0.0 update, being unlocked by participating in the November 2018 online tournament, otherwise available for everyone after the end of this tournament.[9] He returns as a Technical character, but notably has a strong curve on his slices.[10] His sideways Trick Shot is Koopa Boost, which resembles his lunge from Mario Power Tennis, and his forward Trick Shot is Roll Call. His Special Shot, the Spiral Special, involves him and two other Paratroopas flying about and generating a tornado.

In the 3.1.0 update, the player can acquire two alternate colors for the playable Koopa Paratroopa, blue and green. Interestingly, when playing as a Blue Koopa Paratroopa, the other two Koopa Paratroopas that accompany him during his intro and Special Shot cutscenes are a Red and Green Koopa Paratroopa.

Before his official announcement as a playable character, Koopa Paratroopa's emblem had been seen on a bag available as a preorder bonus in Japan.[11]

Paper Mario series

Paper Mario

Paratroopas make their second RPG appearance in Paper Mario. The Paratroopas and Koopas of this game wear sunglasses, which separates them from the Koopas who help Mario; additionally, all opponent Paratroopas have red shells. This feature is carried on into the later two installments. They are found in Pleasant Path and usually attempt to Shell Shot Mario when he approaches, as their First Strike and also their primary attack. In-battle, they are immune to Hammer attacks but are weak to Jump attacks; jumping on them causes them to lose their wings and become normal Koopa Troopas. A Paratroopa mail carrier named Parakarry is also one of Mario's partners in this game. His special ability is that he can carry Mario across small gaps. Dark Paratroopa, a variant of the Dark Koopa, is an unused enemy that has stats and an unused Goombario tattle.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

Koopa Paratroopas appear in Paper Mario's sequel, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. They are first seen in Hooktail Castle, where they still attempt to Shell Shot Mario if he approaches nearby. Paratroopas retain the same battle style and statistics they have in Paper Mario, except that they now do two damage, instead of one. The Paratroopas of this game also wear sunglasses. Additionally, Parakarry makes a cameo in this game. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door introduces the Paratroopa variants, KP Paratroopa, Shady Paratroopa, and the now-used Dark Paratroopa, all which have the same attack patterns as a regular Paratroopa.

Super Paper Mario

A Koopa Paratroopa from Super Paper Mario

Koopa Paratroopas appear in Super Paper Mario. They act as a common enemy and retain the same role they have had in all platformers, while looking the same as their Paper Mario relatives. Their movement pattern differs, depending on its color. Green ones hop around on the ground, while red ones fly in the air in straight lines, horizontally as well as vertically. They appear in Chapter 1-2, 2-1, 3-3 and Rooms 11 and 46 in the Flipside Pit of 100 Trials.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star

A Koopa Paratroopa from Paper Mario: Sticker Star

Red Koopa Paratroopas appear in Paper Mario: Sticker Star as enemies. Koopa Paratroopas do not wear sunglasses, and their appearance is different from the previous Paper Mario games, looking more like they did in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. They appear in World 2 and retain the same attack pattern from previous Paper Mario titles, though their shell shot can now make Mario dizzy, including first strikes. If Mario use a First Strike or jump type sticker, its wings disappear, and its attack pattern becomes identical to that of Koopa Troopas. A Paratroopa Squad appears and ambushes Mario at the end of Yoshi Sphinx. During this fight, the Paratroopas speak as if they were fighter pilots using comms systems, including using the words "Over" after their commands. They have four times HP than their other guards. A variant of the Paratroopa, the Shiny Paratroopa, also appear in the game.

Paper Mario: Color Splash

Red Koopa Paratroopas reappear in Paper Mario: Color Splash with the same appearance and behavior as the previous game. They appear in Daffodil Peak, The Crimson Tower, and Sunset Express. In Dark Bloo Inn, one, referred to as a "red bird", appears as a Tea Party Toad's pet, and Mario has to get it to go back into its cage. Koopa Paratroopa 10-Stacks appear on the Sunset Express. In battle, Koopa Paratroopas attack by either going into their shells and flying at Mario, or diving onto Mario from above, the latter of which can be countered with a Spike Helmet. When they are attacked, they lose their wings and become normal red Koopa Troopas, only using a grounded Shell Shot. As an Enemy Card ally, Paratroopas only use their Shell Shot attack, which hits a row of either aerial or grounded enemies for 25 damage each. They fly right over most enemy attacks, but if an enemy uses a jump attack against the Paratroopa, it is grounded, and its attack will only hit grounded enemies. A Koopa Paratroopa is the second-round opponent in Roshambo Temple #4.

Paper Mario: The Origami King

Origami Koopa Paratroopas appear as enemies in Paper Mario: The Origami King, first appearing in the Fire Vellumental Cave. As usual, jumping on them cause them to lose their wings, and hammer attacks cannot reach them. Larger Paper Macho Koopa Paratroopas also appear in the game.

Regular Koopa Paratroopas appear later in the game as supporting characters. Many of them fly alongside the airship going to Peach's Castle, and help battle the Paper Planes that attack the airship.

Mario Kart series

A red Paratroopa is a playable racer in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, where it is a lightweight racer, along with its partner, a green Koopa Troopa. Like its partner, it has Triple Red Shells and Triple Green Shells as a special item. Its personal kart is the Para-Wing, which has very high acceleration, but low top speed and weight, which is typical of lightweight characters. Paratroopa is the only playable character in Mario Kart: Double Dash!! not to return as a playable character in any later installments of the series so far.

Mario Kart Wii

While Paratroopas do not physically appear in Mario Kart Wii, artwork of one appears on the "Turn Right" billboard in Koopa Cape.

However, Paratroopa was originally going to reappear in Mario Kart Wii as a playable racer, as there is an image of it for the game's character select screen, along with Petey Piranha and Hammer Bro, but the character was cut for unknown reasons. Koopa Troopa's model additionally has an unused wing model, alongside having unused wing textures, indicating that it was originally to share its model with Paratroopa.

Mario Kart 7

Wii Koopa Cape returns as a retro course in Mario Kart 7, including the "Turn Right" billboard using Paratroopa's artwork.

Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

In Mario Kart 8 and its enhanced port, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Paratroopas of various colors (green, red, and blue) appear as spectators in Cloudtop Cruise, GCN Dry Dry Desert, 3DS Piranha Plant Slide, 3DS Neo Bowser City, N64 Choco Mountain, GBA Sky Garden, DS Waluigi Pinball, Wii Mushroom Gorge, Sky-High Sundae, GBA Riverside Park, Yoshi's Island, Tour Bangkok Rush, and Tour Singapore Speedway. They are also referenced by the sponsor Paratroopa Airlines.

In the Super Smash Bros. series, Paratroopas mainly appear as enemies in the single-player campaigns. In Super Smash Bros. Melee, one red Paratroopa and a few green Paratroopas appear in the first stage of the Adventure Mode, Mushroom Kingdom. When a character jumps on a Koopa Paratroopa, it loses its wings and falls to the ground. The player can defeat a Paratroopa without destroying its wings by simply grabbing it, carrying it, and throwing it or if the character uses a special move such as Kirby's swallow. If the red Paratroopa's shell is thrown, fire can be seen on it, but this does not affect gameplay. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Paratroopas are enemies in The Subspace Emissary, and they were given an attack of headbutting fighters who approach them. The red Paratroopas either follow players or fly vertically, while the green ones hop or fly in patterns. Jumping on them removes their wings and turn them into regular Koopa Troopas, just like in the Super Mario series. In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, Koopa Paratroopas are enemies in Smash Run, where behave similarly as in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. There are both red and green variants, with the green hopping up and down toward the player and the red flying up and down or side to side. If the player gets close enough, the Paratroopa attempts to headbutt the player. Jumping on them removes their wings and turn them into simple Koopa Troopas.

Throughout the series, there have also been various collectible items of Koopa Paratroopas. In Super Smash Bros. Melee, there is a trophy of a red Paratroopa. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, there is a trophy of the green and red types that can only be obtained by using a Trophy Stand on the respective type. Similarly, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS also has a trophy for a green and a red Paratroopa each, though in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, only the red Paratroopa trophy appears.

Mario Golf series

“One of the three sacred trees on the course is in trouble. Sounds like a lightning strike split it right down the middle! Wow, imagine being out there when it happened. I don't think I'd ever golf again!”
Koopa Paratroopa, Mario Golf: Super Rush

In the Mario Golf series, Paratroopas mostly have minor roles. In the Nintendo 64 version of Mario Golf, Paratroopa's name occasionally appears on the score card. In Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, a red Paratroopa waves the O.B. flag when players hit the ball out of bounds. In Mario Golf: Super Rush, Koopa Paratroopas are found in Bonny Greens and Ridgerock Lake in Golf Adventure mode.

A Paratroopa had its only major role in Mario Golf: World Tour, as an unlockable playable character. Paratroopa hits the ball with a straight trajectory at 207 yards. Though it is one of the weaker hitting players, Paratroopa compensates for this with higher control and sweet spot stats, meaning that it is less likely for it to duff the ball as well as if the bar is not aligned perfectly, it does not mishit as bad as characters with lower sweet spot stats. It has a slightly higher drive than Peach, but not as strong control stats as her. Paratroopa hits the ball at the middle height, meaning that its balls are moderately affected by wind compared to lower hitting players, but it can scale elevations and trees more easily than lower hitting players. Also, during Mario's and Gold Mario's post-hole animation that is used after they score an Eagle, Hole-in-One, or Albatross, a green Paratroopa is one of the enemies that Mario/Gold Mario collides with after having grabbed a Super Star. To unlock Paratroopa, the player has to collect 50 Star Coins in Challenge Mode.

Mario Party series

Mario Party 4

In Mario Party 4, Paratroopas appear as obstacles in the minigame Paratrooper Plunge.

Mario Party 5

In Mario Party 5, an item called the Paratroopa Capsule can be obtained. When used, a Paratroopa appears and takes away the opposing character's coins determined by a dice block roll of the user. Paratroopas also appear in backgrounds of some minigames, such as Merry Poppings and Wind Wavers.

Mario Party 6

The Paratroopa Capsule returns in Mario Party 6, where is renamed to the Koopa Troopa Orb and it has a different function: it swaps the player who passes the trap with the player who placed the trap. It does not work if the Metal Mushroom Orb is in effect. The Paratroopa featured in the Orb speaks in military jargon. Koopa Paratroopas are also featured in the minigame What Goes Up..., where players either must fall down, avoiding Koopa Paratroopas, or use Koopa Paratroopas to get the highest altitude in order to win. Paratroopas appear in Odd Card Out where they can be one of the different cards the player must choose.

Mario Party Advance

Paratroopa from Mario Party Advance.

Template:Quote2 Paratroopa appears in Mario Party Advance, where he is the owner of the only item shop in Shroom City, Junk, and the cousin of Koopa. According to his description, he acts as a "big-brother type" and looks after the townsfolk. Paratroopa is one of the few characters to not give a quest, but he and his shop are involved in several other quests. If the store is entered while a relevant quest has not been taken, Paratroopa says that the shop is closed, but also that it is going to open soon.

During Bob-omb's quest, Find the Password, Bob-omb tells the player to go to Junk and buy a Bob-omb figure. If Paratroopa is asked about the Bob-omb figure, he reveals that he is a part of the Bob-omb group as well. He provides the password to enter the group, "Baboom." A Toad Force V figure can also be asked about, but Paratroopa says that there are no more of those figures due to the show's popularity and that the shop is receiving more of them soon.

In another quest, Probably a Robbery?, Paratroopa is one of the three suspects in the robbery of the Koopa Bank, run by Koopa. The bank went pitch-black and a bunch of coins were then stolen. When questioned about what happened, Paratroopa claims that he was so surprised during the entire incident he dropped to the floor, but that he saw the shine of the stolen coins. He can also be questioned about the state of the shop, to which he claims that everything is going great. After all of the suspects are interrogated, Paratroopa is identified as the culprit. Koopa insists that Paratroopa would not steal from him since they are cousins. Shroomlock explains that Paratroopa lied while being interrogated, since he claimed to have seen the coins even though the darkness would have prevented him from seeing anything. Paratroopa soon flies in to explain that he only wanted to play a prank on Koopa, and he is forgiven and allowed to walk away instead of being taken to jail. He is incredibly thankful and flies off to return the coins.

During Bowser's quest at the Bowser Pad, Accessorize!, Bowser asks the player to go to Junk and buy him "the perfect gift," which the player has to choose from a ring, necklace, or bracelet. At the item shop, Paratroopa says that he was informed by Bowser of the player's arrival, and gives him the option of the three accessories. Regardless of what is selected, Paratroopa always says that Bowser is going to love the gift.

Mario Party 8

Green and red Paratroopas make a cameo in Mario Party 8, in the minigame mode Test for the Best, where they hold the 2000 and 3000 points signs, respectively.

Mario Party: Island Tour

A red Paratroopa can be seen in Mario Party: Island Tour on the Star-Crossed Skyway board alongside Flutter and a Paragoomba. It appears at the first, second, and last Star Stage and hands out seven Mini Stars. More can be seen in the background of the Hot-Air Hijinks mode. Also, various Paratroopas appear in minigames such as Sky'd and Seek.

Mario Party: The Top 100

In Mario Party: The Top 100, a red Koopa Paratroopa makes a minor appearance in the minigame Leaf Leap from Mario Party 5 when the player reaches a certain height.

Super Mario Party

Koopa Paratroopas appear as non-playable characters in Super Mario Party. They appear in all boards in Mario Party Mode and, if a player chooses to, takes them to the spot of another player for 5 coins (a price that rises to 7 coins after a certain point). In the River Survival mode, a Paratroopa can appear before a waterfall, taking a photo of the rafters. When walking around the main plaza, the player may encounter a Koopa Paratroopa, who may say they will set up a cheer squad for them. If not, it may offer to cool the player off with its wings.

Mario & Luigi series

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga / Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions

Koopa Paratroopas are absent in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, but have a very similar, beanish relative called Paratroopeas, who attack in a very similar way to Koopa Paratroopas, except that they have the ability to heal. Like Koopa Paratroopas, they lose their wings once they take enough damage and they become Troopeas. A stronger version of them exists are called Scaratroopeas, who attack in a faster manner and have the ability to even revive KO'd opponents.

Koopa Paratroopas appear in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions after being absent in the original game. They appear as enemies and recruitable allies exclusively in Minion Quest: The Search for Bowser. They are Flying troopers, and their Special Skill is Cranium Crush. There are green and red variants, with the red ones having an advantage against spear-wielding enemies.

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time

Though Koopa Paratroopas do not appear in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, they are mentioned by a Toad in Peach's Castle about how he wished to have wings of a Paratroopa or Lakitu's Cloud to fly in a remote Time Hole. They are also referenced in the description for Paraslacks, a clothing that increases an adult Mario brother's speed and defense.

A group of blue-shelled Koopa Paratroopas known as the Koopa Paratroopa Trio appears in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. In this game, they teach the Mario Bros. the blue shell technique. Their appearance is similar to the Paper Mario series since they also wear the sunglasses. Another kind of Paratroopa appear in Bowser's Castle. Their shells are red and they do not wear glasses. Corporal Paraplonk is a red-shelled Paratroopa who wears green shoes and a red bucket on his head, and he serves as one Bowser's lackeys, alongside Private Goomp and Sergeant Guy, all whom are members of the Elite Trio. Green and red Koopa Paratroopas also appear in the remake reprising both their original roles and new roles as allies and enemies in the Bowser Jr.'s Journey mode, with the Koopa Paratroopa Trio appearing as a new minion.

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team

Sprite of a green Koopa Paratroopa, from Mario & Luigi: Dream Team.

Paratroopas make several small appearances in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. During the battle against the Elite Trio in Dreamy Driftwood Shore, a pair of Paratroopas appear with a purple block each during Corporal Paraplonk's attack, placing a block in line with Mario, to both sides of him. In Dreamy Neo Bowser Castle (Bowser's Dream), two green Paratroopas appear as Bowser is demanding for meat to grow bigger. In Neo Bowser Castle, after Bowser betrays Antasma and takes the Dream Stone for his own, a Paratroopa is seen carrying Princess Peach. In the final battle, Dreamy Bowser creates golden, otherworldly Dreamy Paratroopas to send after Mario and Luigi. With the exception of Corporal Paraplonk, no other red-shelled Paratroopas appear in the game.

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam

Although normal Koopa Paratroopas do not appear in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, their paper versions do.

WarioWare series

Koopa Paratroopas make small appearances in several of 9-Volt's classic Nintendo-themed microgames in the WarioWare series. The first time they have appeared in is WarioWare: Touched!, in the Stomp! version of the microgame Super Mario Bros. Here, players need to tap a Koopa Paratroopa to turn it into a Koopa Troopa, then tap it again to put it in its shell, then tap once more to send its shell careening. A Koopa Paratroopa is featured in a microgame in WarioWare: D.I.Y., called Paratroopa. Here, players, as Mario, need to avoid the bouncing green Paratroopa by moving left or right.

Mario Baseball series

A Red Koopa Paratroopa prepares to bat, in Mario Super Sluggers.
A Red Koopa Paratroopa prepares to bat in Mario Super Sluggers

In both Mario Superstar Baseball and Mario Super Sluggers, Paratroopa appears as a playable character. In Mario Superstar Baseball, it is classified as a Technique player, where it has good ball control while Mario Super Sluggers describes it as an all-around character. In both games, Paratroopa has two colors: its regular red shell and the green-shelled version, which they slightly differ in stats. It has the ability, Super Jump, to catch high flying balls in the air. In the Challenge mode of Mario Superstar Baseball, both Paratroopas are teammates for Donkey Kong's team. For the Superstar Challenge, Paratroopas missions are smacking a hit, using its High Jump ability to make a catch, and pitching a whole game and win as Paratroopa.

In Mario Super Sluggers, it is one of the few levitating characters that cannot feel the effects of a POW ball or when giant in Graffiti Runner; however in Graffiti Runner, it cannot create earthquakes as a result. Koopa Paratroopa is slightly slower than it was in the predecessor, being slower than the basic Koopa Troopa. Its fielding skills are improved, however, along with its batting and pitching skills, though the Green Koopa Paratroopa sacrifices its pitching skills to boost its batting skills. Both Koopa Paratroopas show good chemistry with Koopa Troopa, Paragoomba, and Bowser. While the Koopa Troopa shows good chemistry with Bowser Jr. and Dry Bones, Koopa Paratroopa's chemistry with these characters is neutral. When Koopa Paratroopa tackles the ball, it has moderate range and it attacks similar to its shell shot in the Paper Mario series. In the Challenge Mode of this game, Koopa Paratroopas are found on Wario's team, the Wario Muscles rather than being on Donkey Kong's team.

Super Princess Peach

A G. R. P-Troopa A Mad G. P-Troopa
The glad and mad Koopa Paratroopas

Koopa Paratroopas appear in Super Princess Peach, having the same roles from the Super Mario platformer games. They have the same appearance as in the Yoshi's Island games. Two types of Paratroopas under the effects of the Vibe Scepter also appear: the Rage-infused Mad G. P-Troopa and the Joy-infused G. R. P-Troopa.

Mario Hoops 3-on-3

Paratroopa makes an appearance as an unlockable character in the game, Mario Hoops 3-on-3. Similar to its appearance in Mario Tennis, it is a Tricky character, meaning that its shots to the hoop are hard to anticipate and predict. It can be unlocked by at least winning a bronze trophy in the regular Mushroom Tourney. Its special ability is the Wing Shot, which can be performed by tapping the screen in an 'N' pattern twice.

Mario & Sonic series

Koopa Paratroopas make a few appearances in the Mario & Sonic series. In Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, four green Paratroopas appear at the start of Mario's Figure Skating Spectacular, helping Kamek capture the Toads. In the Nintendo 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, there is a single red Koopa Paratroopa in Golf Plus, where it appears on one of the holes to move the flag and the hole after each shot.

Koopa Partroopas appear in green, red, and yellow varieties in Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition.

Green Koopa Paratroopa

Green Koopa Paratroopas are Water-attribute enemies. In battle, in addition to attacking normally, they may occasionally use Winged Green Shell to nullify Fire and Dark attribute damage for two turns. When defeated, it may randomly drop a Water Block of a Green Koopa Troopa or a P-Wing, while defeating it with a 10+ Combo attack guarantees that it drops a Fruit. As Water enemies, they take extra damage from Wood attribute attacks and less from Fire damage.

As teammates, Green Koopa Paratroopas gain a Light sub-attribute (being Water/Light teammates), and have an HP rating of 4/6, an ATK rating of 1/6, and a RCV rating of 2/6. Their Winged Green Shell Skill recovers 500 HP for the player's team and changes any Wood Orbs on the player's Orb field into Water Orbs, while their Awoken Skill Water Boost raises the ATK of any Water attribute teammates when the player clears a horizontal row of Water Orbs. Green Koopa Paratroopas use Fruits and Rare Fruits to raise their Skill Levels. The player can create a Green Koopa Paratroopa by transforming a Green Koopa Troopa with two P-Wings, and can be transformed into a Big Green Koopa Paratroopa using five Super Mushrooms.

Yoshi's Woolly World / Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World

Yoshi's Woolly World

Koopa Paratroopas reappear in Yoshi's Woolly World and its port Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World. Due to the game depicting the characters, locations, items as being made of yarn, hence the title, their wings become outlines of yarn, and the beige part of their shells is replaced with a white button. When they are hit by a yarn ball, they become Koopa Troopas just as in previous games; they first appear in Knot-Wing the Koopa's Fort. Knot-Wing the Koopa is a boss which appears several times throughout Yoshi's Woolly World. Knot-Wing has the appearance of a large Koopa Paratroopa—however, he has the ability to regain his wings after losing them.

Skylanders: SuperChargers

Koopa Paratroopas appear in the Nintendo versions of Skylanders: SuperChargers as part of Bowser's moveset.

Minecraft

In the Super Mario Mash-up for Minecraft, Koopa Paratroopas replace Vexes as enemies, appearing much smaller than in their other appearances.

Mario Sports Superstars

Paratroopas appear as selectable sidekicks exclusively to the baseball mode of Mario Sports Superstars. Four color varieties of the Paratroopa can be selected separately: red, green, blue, and yellow, making this color choice greater than their appearances in the Mario Baseball series. They are classified as a Technique character, meaning that they have excellent control of the ball while they are batting and they have better fielding stats, though they are not speedy nor particularly powerful characters. All Paratroopas have only three pitching options, and they vary depending on the color. The Paratroopas additionally share similar stats, with the only differences being pitching velocity, speed, and mainly stamina. In the collectible digital card, the green Paratroopa is the one featured on the card.

In golf, due to the characters reusing animations from Mario Golf: World Tour, Mario and Metal Mario defeat a Paratroopa again in their Eagle, Hole-in-One, and Albatross post-hole animation.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle

In Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, a Koopa Paratroopa sprite from Super Mario Bros. can be seen on the wallpaper in the laboratory in the introductory cutscene. The Annihilation from Above weapon is also styled after a Paratroopa.

Dr. Mario World

Koopa Paratroopas appear in Dr. Mario World as assistants. In stage mode, their effect is to increase the obtained score for each red virus eliminated, where the base score increase is greater at higher levels. In versus mode, the effect is to instead clear the bottom-most row of objects if an object has reached the penultimate row from the bottom line; this effect activates only once per round. The chance that the effect activates is greater at higher levels, where it is guaranteed to activate at the maximum level. In Clinic Events, a Koopa Paratroopa was featured as a patient during season 8.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Koopa Paratroopas appear in The Super Mario Bros. Movie as some of the main troops in Bowser's army. A blue-colored, spiny-shelled Paratroopa, known as the Koopa General, is featured as the captain of the Koopa Troop.

Originally in Super Mario Kart, if the player ranked 3rd place in a Mario Kart GP, four red Koopa Paratroopas would appear flying above the racers. When the winner opened the bottle of champagne, the last Paratroopa would be shot down by the cork and angrily bounce away.

Characteristics and traits

SMB Red Koopa Paratroopa Artwork.pngKoopaParatroopaClubNintendo.png
The left image depicts the Paratroopa's original design, while the right image depicts the Paratroopa's current design.

Koopa Paratroopas have an identical appearance to their parent species, the Koopa Troopa. They are designed after tortoises, and were originally designed being a quadruped until Super Mario World, although various artwork of Paratroopas have anthropomorphized quadruped Paratroopas. In Super Mario World, they have been given shoes to designate their current bipedal appearance, just as regular Koopa Troopas have gotten. Most artwork of Paratroopas have colored their shells red to further distinguish from regular Koopa Troopa, though multiple artwork of green-shelled Paratroopas exist. All playable appearances of a Koopa Paratroopa have been red-shelled, with some exceptions including the Mario Baseball games giving players the choice to choose different colors for the Paratroopa, although the red Paratroopa is the default color regardless.

The most distinguishing feature of Paratroopas are their wings, which enable them to fly. These wings are not firmly attached to the Paratroopa's shells, with usually a single stomp getting rid of their wings and turning them into normal Koopa Troopas; this is further enhanced by the ability of simply adding wings to multiple objects in Super Mario Maker, Koopa Troopas included and the existence of the P-Wing. The shell-color of the Paratroopa is additionally used to separate behavioral differences: green-shelled Paratroopas typically bounce around or fly left and right while red-shelled Paratroopas fly up and down; many exceptions are made to this rule, however. The Paratroopa's wing length differs from game to game, with Paratroopas in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Paper Mario, Yoshi's Island DS, and Super Princess Peach having very long wings, though the normal length for most games of the wings is rather short.

In games where Paratroopas have a voice, Paratroopas mostly borrow their voice clips from Koopa Troopa's electronic ones. Initially, Paratroopa sounds identically to Koopa Troopa beginning with Mario Tennis for the Nintendo 64; Mario Kart: Double Dash!! is the first game to increase the pitch of its voice clips to distinguish from Koopa Troopa and has been the norm for Paratroopa ever since, with a few exceptions.

Profiles and statistics

Main article: List of Koopa Paratroopa profiles and statistics

Bios often mention the ability of Koopa Paratroopas to fly and to lose its wings to turn into Koopa Troopas once they are stomped on. In various Super Mario RPGs barring Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Koopa Paratroopas feature very similar stats to Koopa Troopas, having high defense due to the protection of their shells and they can avoid grounded attacks thanks to their flying nature. However, their wings can usually be removed by the means of jumping on them, which turns them into ordinary Koopa Troopas. In the sports spin-offs that feature a playable Koopa Paratroopa, the playable Paratroopas are usually classified as technical or trickier characters, having a focus on outplaying and managing their opponents differently than relying on pure power or speed stats. Aside from that, they are usually very balanced, having no huge strengths or weaknesses.
