Triathlon is a Multi-Discipline Event that appears exclusively in the Nintendo 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games. The objective of the event is to complete all three sections in the fastest time possible. The starting record for this event is 1:48:53.28.
Gameplay
This event consists of three different sections, swimming, cycling and running. In the swimming section, the player begins on the final 50m of the swim, and must use to cause their character to swim faster than the low automatic speed, and must also use to dive under the waves that come along the river at various points in the event. the player travels at a slightly slower speed while diving, however failing to dive under in time will cause the player to be slowed down significantly more and will also be pushed backwards a short distance. In the cycling section, the player continues the event from the final 340m, and must still use to speed up, but is now used to lean when going downhill. On the downhill, sections, the player must press and hold to lean and increase their speed while going downhill. Remaining standing while the character is going downhill will cause them to start sweating and slow down, and vice versa for going uphill. During the running section which begins on the final 200m, 's purpose once again remains the same, but is now repurposed for using water to refill the character's stamina. The stamina gauge is depleted by using to run faster, and must be replenished by using a pressing to use a water bottle. The character runs at a lower speed while using water, but will briefly come to a halt is their stamina is fully depleted. The player only has a maximum of four water bottles to use in this section, and if they are all used up will perform no additional function. Omochao appears in the top left corner of the screen to give advice during the event, giving the advice "When a big wave comes, dive!" for the swimming section, "Stand for uphills, lean for downhills!" during the cycling segment and "Use water before you run out of breath!" for the running section. These are each prompted at the start of the event and each time the player fails to perform the suggested action.
