Sharks[1][2] appear in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins as enemies. They swim slowly at first, but charge at Mario if he is nearby. Sharks can only be defeated from a Star, or rarely a Green Shell from the surface. Sharks wear boxing gloves, which they do not appear to use against Mario.

In volume 9 of the Super Mario-kun, Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi encounter a shark during their boat trip. The shark attacks them, but Mario throws Yoshi to the shark to defeat it, although Yoshi gets injured.
