Level 8-1 (Level 6-1 in the GBA version) is the first level of Twilight City in Mario vs. Donkey Kong and its remake. The high score for this level in the original version is 26500. In the Nintendo Switch remake, the target time for this level's Time Attack is 70.00.
Overview
In the GBA version only, the level opens with a cinematic showing Mario navigating through three lasers.
In the first area, the player has to first pass through lasers that switch between red, then blue, then yellow. The player then has to use a springboard, pass through two yellow lasers, jump a gap, and then pass through a red and then a blue laser. Next, the player has to use a springboard to get onto an above platform while avoiding a yellow laser. Jumping up some platforms to reach a conveyor belt, the player has to ride it to the right while avoiding two yellow lasers and then two blue lasers. After grabbing the Key, the player needs to drop down to the right and press a Direction Switch to change the direction of the conveyor. Using the springboard to get back up, the player has to ride the conveyor again and then move underneath it. Avoiding two red lasers, the player has to drop down back to the lower ground, and then avoid the original three lasers in reverse order to reach the locked door.
In the second area, the player has to climb up a ladder and press a yellow Color Switch. When the Wrench Shy Guys to the right are on the yellow platforms, the player needs to climb down and press the red Color Switch to make them fall onto the spikes, allowing the player to use them as platforms to get across, though the player needs to avoid an attack from the Wrench Shy Guy on the far right while doing so. Once across the spikes, the player needs to grab the Wrench Shy Guy on the platform, press the Direction Switch, and toss the enemy onto the conveyor above. With the enemy on the spikes to the right, the player needs to do a Handstand Double Jump to get onto the conveyor belt and crouch to reach a set of ropes, below which is a 1-Up Mushroom the player can collect by using the Wrench Shy Guy as a platform. Climbing up the ropes to the right, the player can reach a Direction Switch and a yellow Color Switch they need to press. After using a Wrench Shy Guy as a platform to get across spikes, the player can crouch and ride a conveyor to reach the Mini-Mario.
