Staff Notes

Written by: Lord Bowser (talk)

Hey. Still haven't played Odyssey. Still buried deep underground. Broke No Shave November because I couldn't handle my old man beard. Traumatized by the ending of Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony. Rapidly losing sanity. Send help.

Ahem, anyway, welcome to another edition of Fun Stuff! We're a bit smaller this time around, though I understand as I'm sure a lot of our writers are pretty busy this time, myself included. Unfortunately, these staff notes will be my only appearance this issue, as school has drained all of my available time and energy to write. We still have a great selection of games for you all to play, however, so sit tight and enjoy!

Additionally, I'd like to welcome BBQ Turtle (talk) onto our team! She'll be joining us with a new section; Anagrams! It's a pretty tricky and fun game, and I hope you enjoy its debut!

Reminder that next issue is our holiday issue for the year! Join up in the festivities with nice themed sections! We'll be sure to have a blast next issue, so do your best! Until then, I hope you enjoy this month's edition of Fun Stuff.

Before I go, though, I've been hearing some rumors about... a 'Shroom murder game?! I don't know what exactly this pertains, but mark my words, there will be absolutely NO MURDERS under my watch! Anyone who murders will be forced to sit in the corner, so don't do it! That is all.

Section of the Month

Funky takes the win again for Issue 127 in a very impressive streak! Congratulations to Yoshi876 for snagging second place, and to our new writers LTQ and Camwood for having a great debut month as well!

Anagrams

Written by: BBQ Turtle (talk)

Hello and welcome to the first ever edition of Anagrams! This new (And hopefully recurring) section is based on the classic word game, where you have to rearrange a word or phrase to create another one using the same letters. As this month's issue is 2D game themed, I've made a set of New Super Mario Bros. U based anagrams (I know that strictly speaking it's 2.5D, but I'm not really familiar with any of the older 2D games, so let's just round that number down). I hope you enjoy these new puzzles!

How it works...

Basically, this puzzle consists of solving the anagrams. Each month has a specific theme, which will give you a clue about what sort of words or phrases the anagrams will be. I've also included the boxes that the anagrams will fit into, so you'll be able to tell how many words it will solve to be and how many letters will be in each word, which should give you a hand too. You'll also notice that within each set of boxes, one of the squares are yellow. As you solve each anagram, note down the letter which appears in the yellow squares, and if you can solve all of the anagrams, you'll also get a bonus anagram to solve from completing all of the others. I've included the letter configuration for this one at the bottom too, just to give you an extra helping hand. Best of luck!

Picross

Written by: Camwood777 (talk)

Hi-ho, hi-ho, something something we go! ...I don't quite remember all that song, but I do know I'm Cam here, with another duo of Picross puzzles for you! This was actually written way in advance for this issue... Well, how in advance? Why, about 3 or so days before issue 127 even aired! Though, it was submitted much later (thanks procrastination). I wanted to be efficient once I knew I got the part of making these puzzles for The 'Shroom, and I figured, if I knew what puzzles I wanted to make for the issue, why not just sit down and make 'em now?

This will be our last issue for a "fall" or "autumn" related season of the year. So, I decided to dedicate one of our puzzles to this notion; I won't say what it is since that'll obviously spoil what the puzzle is. But that's not all. Oh, did you think I forgot about this issue's special just 'cause I'm new? I think not! For Issue 128 and our celebration of the 8-est of bits, I figured I'd dedicate at least one puzzle to the very thing it celebrates, or at least of something closely related to it. Similarly to what I did last time for the 20x20 puzzle, I made a whopping 25x15 puzzle for you to solve this time!

...Oh! And note that if you see any contradictions between the answer/the numbers, please tell me via the Wiki talk or by the Mario Boards PMs, and I'll get to fixing that. This time I had a few on Puzzle A, and nearly missed out on fixing them, and they were quite glaring.

As will be standard, here's the rules of how to play, taken from the last issue. If you want to know how to play, simply take any program you can edit images with (MS paint is... more than an option), or even print it out if you're so inclined, and you can shade in the symbols. As for the rules...

  • Each number on a given row or column (which are referred to as "hints" in Picross) Represents a line of filled-in squares (or tiles/cells, as I prefer calling them) on that particular row or column; for instance, a row starting with "3" would have a row of three filled-in squares with no white/blank squares inbetween them.
    • There can be multiple lines in a single column, however. (For example, a row of 7, then a row of 4. In this case, there'd be 7 in a row, then a gap, then a row of 4.)
  • A gap between two "rows" is defined as one white/blank square between two rows.
  • Each square is filled with either black or white. You can fill the white squares you know of with a different color, such as gray, to keep track easier.
  • It's way, was easier to start off with rows that have few gaps, and ESPECIALLY easier to start with rows with large numbers.
  • I recommend playing Pokemon Picross on the 3DS (it's free, yo!); the tutorial will explain things a lot better than I ever could.

Alright! Here's the two puzzles!

It's aMAZEing

Written by: Lakituthequick (talk)

Good day people and welcome to this month's It's aMAZEing!

This issue is themed after the 2D games, so let's visit a timeless classic: a Goomba as they appeared in Super Mario Bros.!

Do you have an idea for a maze you'd like to see? Leave a message on my talkpage or find me on the forums and send me a personal message, and your idea and name may be featured in a future episode!

How to play:

  • Copy the image into your favourite art program (like Paint, Photoshop, GIMP, etc.)
  • Click the line, pencil or brush tool and adjust the size as needed
  • Draw your line though the maze from start to finish
  • Zoom in and out as needed

KenKen

Written by: Meta Knight (talk)

Hey everyone, I know this month is going to be themed around 2D games, but when I have just numbers there isn't a lot I can do. However, I do hope you enjoy thinking through another edition of KenKen! In case you need a refresher, a tutorial puzzle is below.

How to Play:

1. You must fill in the squares using numbers that vary depending on the size of the grid (1-3 for a 3x3 grid, 1-4 for a 4x4 grid, 1-6 for a 6x6 grid) in each row and column. You cannot repeat a number in any row or column similar to the rules of Sudoku.

2. The areas of the grid with dark outlines around them are called cages. At the top left of each cage is a target number and operation. For example, if the pairing in the top left of the cage says "2÷". That means the two numbers that go in will equal 2 when divided (÷).

3. Try and look for any cages that are around just one box. These are freebies in the sense that you don't have to do any math and can just stick whatever number it is in. For example, if there's a single box and the top left of the cage says 3, just put a 3. Feel free to take a look at the sample puzzle below for a step-by-step process! Or you can just take a crack at the puzzles. Keep in mind in certain situations there may be more than one right answer, but only one example solution will be shown. If you've followed the rules it could still be valid. Be careful though because it can be easy to make mistakes.

Tutorial Puzzle: 3x3
Let's look for cages that are just by themselves. In this example, the middle square has inside it's cage a 2, and in the bottom left is a 3. Let's fill those in to get them out of the way.
Now we'll crack the cage in the bottom right that says "1-". Well we already know that there's a 2 in the center, and the numbers cannot be in the same row or column, so the left square has to be a 1, while the right square has to be a 2. When reading left to right, it seems as if it's saying 1-2= -1, which is not 1. However, the order of the numberings in the cages does not matter. As long as the numbers inside can equal 1 by use of subtracting, it's valid.
Now we can solve the box that says "7+". The middle column has both a 2 and a 1, so the only thing left in that column is a 3. We can fill that in. Now that we know that we have to get 7 through addition, and one of the numbers is a 3, the other two numbers have to be a 3 and a 1. The top right corner will be a 1, and below that a 3. There isn't any rule against using two of the same number in the same cage, as long as they aren't in the same row or column it's fair game.
Finally, the last cage can be easily solved by finding out what is missing from the corresponding rows. The top box must be a 2 because the top row is missing a 2. Similarly, the box below it is a 1 because the middle row needs a 1. To check and make sure it is valid, 2÷1=2. Just as a reminder the order of the numbers inside the cage do not have to match traditional reading rules. If it was a 1 at the top and a 2 on the bottom, it would have still fit the 2÷ requirement, but invalid because there would be numbers of the same kind in the same row.
Everything is now solved. Congratulations, now you're all set to start tackling some KenKen puzzles on your own!

Where in the Marioverse is Carmen Sandiego?

Written by: FunkyK38 (talk)

HOW TO PLAY

Each issue, you will be given a case to solve and clues to use to help you find the solution! Use your Mario knowledge to crack the case!

You will begin each case at the scene of the crime, and you will be given three clues from passerby as to where the next hot spot is and what game it’s from. Using your knowledge of Mario games and the Super Mario Wiki, figure out where the crook is and go track them down! There are four locations each round: the crime scene (1) at the start, two locations (2 and 3) with clues, and the hideout for the crook of the month (4). Answers for locations will be given with the corresponding round, for example, the clues from the crime scene will lead you to location 2, and once you open the spoiler bubbles for location 2, you will be given the correct answer. You can open the clues for each location in any order you’d like, but be careful! You may encounter an incorrect clue that could throw you off the case!

Clues offered will give you a hint either about the next location or the game it’s in. Unlike a regular Carmen Sandiego game, you do not have to collect information about the crook you are tracking down.

Challenge round (optional):

-Find all locations and games correctly in two minutes or less

-Find all locations and games correctly without using the rest of the Wiki for help

Find that missing shop!

"Cadet, we have a problem for you to solve! One of Carmen's cronies, Sneaky Tucks, has managed to snatch Funky Kong's entire shop, plane and all! Without his supplies, Donkey Kong and co. will have no one to purchase balloons, hearts, and barrels from! A shopkeeper's pride is his shop, and this funky monkey needs your help to get everything back! Get to work!"
