Booksquirm is a 4-Player minigame in Mario Party 4, Mario Party: The Top 100, and Mario Party Superstars. The minigame's name is a pun on the word "bookworm," a term used to describe a person who reads a lot of books.
Introduction
A book is shown opening, then the four players land onto the page. The words in the book are arranged in incomprehensible structures, comparable to lorem ipsum text.
Gameplay
Pages of the book will begin to turn (fall), so the players must find holes in the pages to avoid being flattened. Players can share a hole. As time goes on, the pages will turn much faster, and the number of holes in each page will decrease. This process continues until one character is left standing. In Mario Party 4, if the remaining players get flattened at the same time, the game is a draw; in The Top 100 and Superstars, this is the case only if all four players are flattened simultaneously.
In Mario Party 4, there is also an unlockable version of Booksquirm, called Challenge Booksquirm, which can be earned by playing the original Booksquirm in a party, and can then be selected in the Extra Room. It challenges the player to see how many pages they can last until their character is squashed. If the player manages to surpass 15 pages, a Goomba plate is placed in the minigame Present Room. Challenge Booksquirm also ends after any player manages to pass through 99 pages.[1]
In Mario Party: The Top 100 and Mario Party Superstars, a falling sound plays each time the pages turn. Also, the players make disappointed noises when flattened.
In Mario Party Superstars, an "Endless" mode, which follows the rules of Challenge Booksquirm, can be accessed from Free Play.
Ending
In Mario Party 4 and Mario Party Superstars, the camera zooms in on the winning character, who does their victory pose. Losing players are not seen, as they got squished in the book. If the minigame ends in a draw, nothing happens.
