Mario and Luigi's father, presumably Mr. Mario or Papa Mario, is Mario and Luigi's father. He is a wide-set man, similar in frame to Mario. None of his appearances gave him a speaking role and his face has never been seen. At the time of his sons' births, Mario and Luigi's father was living in a small mushroom-shaped house in the Mushroom Kingdom with Mama Mario, though it is not confirmed that they were married. He smoked a pipe while his sons were toddlers, and wore a tucked-in collared shirt during the day, and a nightshirt and slippers to bed. All other aspects of his life, including his current appearance, personality, residence, and relationship with the boys, are unknown.

Biography

Yoshi's Island series

Mario and Luigi's father appeared at the end Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, when he and his supposed wife found Baby Mario and Baby Luigi on their doorstep, whom were delivered by the stork. Unaware that his sons had just been rescued from the Koopa Troop by the Yoshis, Mr. Mario held Luigi aloft (Mama Mario had Mario), and entered the world of parenthood.

However, the babies were not yet out of danger, and were kidnapped once more by Kamek in the middle of the night during the events of Yoshi's Island DS, causing a great commotion in the Mario household. But while Papa and Mama Mario knew that their children were in peril this time, they were still powerless against the Koopas, and the Yoshis saved the day once again. The stork returned the babies, and although it was not the end of their adventures (as babies or as adults), their father has not made another in-game appearance (not counting the Game Boy Advance port of Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3).

Appearances in Other Media

Super Mario Amada series

Papa Mario first appeared in the Super Mario Amada series adaptation of Issunboshi. In this version of Mario's birth, the baby was miraculously born in Papa and Mama Mario's household when a shooting star passed over the small dwelling. Mario was extremely tiny, smaller than Papa Mario's hand. The couple raised the baby, but to their amazement the child did not grow taller and bigger as he aged. He simply remained tiny. One day, Mario convinced his parents that he was old enough to explore the world alone, despite his small size. Papa and Mama Mario eventually agreed, allowing their son to independently pursue his own adventures around the globe.

Mr. Mario was pictured in the third panel of Family Album "The Early Years", which was released five years before Yoshi's Island, but is set later in Mario's life, when Mario was a toddler. In the comic, Mario is shown to have been meddling with his father's pipe, making it produce bubbles instead of smoke. Mario is pictured fleeing from from his irate father.

Relatives

In the games, Mr. Mario has two sons: Mario and Luigi. Their mother, Mama Mario, is presumed to be his wife. Earlier sources (such as Family Album "The Early Years" and the game Super Mario Bros.) implied that Mario was older than Luigi, however as of Yoshi's Island, they are usually recognized as twins.

The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! introduces many more members of the Mario family. Mr. Mario has a pair of nieces named Marianne and Luigeena, and two nephews called Mario Joe and Luigi Bob. As it is not revealed which sides of the family any of the relatives hail from, it is unknown whether Grandma Mia is Mr. Mario's mother or mother-in-law, and whether Aunt Luigeena is his sister or sister-in-law. The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 mentions a second sister/sister-in-law named Aunt Maria.

Also, according to the Saturday Supercade's Donkey Kong segment, Pauline is Mario's niece, which would make Mr. Mario her grandfather. However, this contradicts the continuity of the Mario series, in which she is Mario's ex-girlfriend, and thus of no relation to his parents.
