Relatives

Ghost Goombas[1] (generically referred to by Nintendo Power as ghosts)[2] are enemies in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. These Boo-like ghosts of Goombas are encountered in the third level of the Pumpkin Zone only, and their appearance is a Goomba head atop a ghostly body with a brownish-orange coloration in artwork. True to its appearance, a Ghost Goomba is invincible and floats wavily like a Boo, but it moves faster and forward like a Goomba. Green Shells and Stars are effective in defeating it. In the Kodansha adaptation, Ghost Goombas are specifically depicted as the ghosts of Masked Ghouls.[3]

It's the spirit of Goomba!

The Goomba (p. 72) has become a ghost. The ghost has no physical form and is totally immune to Mario's attacks. Mario must run through it quickly, as it moves in a very unpredictable manner.

Names in other languages

Unlike most mainline Super Mario titles, Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins did not receive officially localized enemy indexes at the time of its release on the Game Boy and not all enemies are listed in its instruction booklets. Consequentially, most available non-Japanese names come from localizations of the Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia.

Notes

  • Ghost Goombas have an unused sprite of them being squished, supposedly from being stomped.[11]
  • In a KC Deluxe mini-guide, Ghost Goombas are referred to as the ghost of Goombo.[12] In actuality, Ghost Goombas are approximately the size of regular Goombas and even slightly bigger than the game's Boos.
  • A Ghost Goomba appears in the concept art of Super Mario Odyssey, suggesting Ghost Goombas may have been planned to appear in the game somewhere early in development.[13]
