Throughout the Yoshi series, Yoshi is able to attain different forms through different means. Typically, most of the forms resemble vehicles, though there are exceptions. Depending on the game, they may be triggered by morph bubbles (Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3, Yoshi's Island DS), Whirly Gates (Yoshi's New Island), or Transformation Doors (Yoshi's Woolly World, Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World). These transformations are timed, and unless Yoshi makes it through the area in time (with the goal being a Yoshi Block, a multicolored Checkpoint Ring, or rainbow yarn ring, respectively to the previous starting points), he will be sent back to the beginning. Later games add clocks to these segments to boost the time limit. Yoshi Topsy-Turvy simply has Yoshi automatically transform upon reaching the segment the form is used and are not given a time limit, though most of the forms in this game also gradually move towards the goal themselves. Both Yoshi Topsy-Turvy and Yoshi's New Island use tilt controls for their transformations. In games featuring Baby Mario or other baby riders, they are safely held away while Yoshi is in one of these forms, allowing him to be hit without causing the baby to take damage.

Yoshi's Story, Yoshi Touch & Go, Yoshi's Crafted World, and Yoshi and the Mysterious Book lack this manner of transformation. Yoshi's Island DS features it, but downplays it by only featuring a few, all of which return from before and two of which only appear for a single level.
