Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is an upcoming side-scrolling platform game in the Yoshi series set to be released for the Nintendo Switch 2 on May 21, 2026 as part of the Super Mario Bros. 40th Anniversary celebration. First announced during the September 2025 Nintendo Direct, the game features a distinct art style resembling paper illustration, featuring low-frame rate animations, painterly textures on Yoshi and interactive creatures, and pencil-esque outlines on faraway objects. As with its previous platform installment, Yoshi's Crafted World, the game was made using Unreal Engine.

On May 7, 2026, a free demo for the game was released at select Best Buy, Target, Walmart, and GameStop stores in the US.

Story

While Yoshi is eating fruit from a tree, a sentient book known as Mister Encyclopedia (Mr. E for short) falls from the sky. As he cannot read his own pages, which hold information on various creatures, Yoshi uses Mr. E's magnifying glass to magically jump into his pages and help investigate them. Inside Mr. E's pages, Yoshi discovers information about each creature, which is then written down in Mr. E.

While exploring Mr. E's pages, Yoshi comes across Bowser Jr., and later Kamek.

Gameplay

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is a side-scrolling platformer starring Yoshi. In the game, Yoshi retains his main abilities from previous Yoshi games. He can eat creatures and objects with his tongue to create eggs, and then aim and throw them at other creatures or objects. Yoshi can also Flutter Jump and Ground Pound. A new move to this game is the Tail Flick, which lets Yoshi grab creatures and carry them on his back. While carrying a creature, Yoshi can make use of their abilities, such as using Crazee Dayzees to make flowers bloom. Other creatures instead help Yoshi traverse in new ways, such as riding on them like a surfboard or floating inside bubbles they create. Yoshi does not lose health when hit by creatures and cannot be defeated in this game.

The levels in Yoshi and the Mysterious Book are focused more towards exploration and discovery, lacking any time limit. Each level is composed of a specific creature's habitat, which starts unnamed. The player's overall objective is to study this creature by discovering its traits. Traits can be discovered by interacting with the creature itself, or by using it to interact with the environment or other creatures. After completing the main goal of each habitat, the player then exits Mr. E, and the traits learned about the creature are written down in his pages. A star is awarded for each discovery, with one large discovery awarding three stars and signalling the end of the level. Afterwards, all discoveries are logged on Mr. E's pages and the creature can be named by the player or by Mr. E. Tokens collected during levels can be used to unlock hints towards discoveries which have not been found yet. Initially, they reveal a sillhouette of the discovery, but spending more tokens unlocks further details.

Stars can be used to unlock new chapters in the book, with six chapters being known so far:

• Chapter 6: Remote Isle

Yoshi	A green dinosaur and the main playable character of the game.
Yoshis	Other members of Yoshi's species. Pink, Light-Blue and Blue Yoshis can be seen in the game's first teaser.
Mr. E	Short for Mister Encyclopedia; a living magical book that falls onto Yoshi's Island, but is incapable of reading his own pages. He seeks the aid of the Yoshis to catalogue the creatures on his pages.
Bowser Jr.	Bowser's son, who becomes lost inside Mr. E while looking for the Bewilder Bird.
Kamek	Bowser Jr.'s caretaker, who searches for him within Mr. E's pages and then joins him in the search for the Bewilder Bird.

Creatures

Creature	Description
Chapter 1: Wildwoods
Crazee Dayzee	Flower-like creatures capable of making other flowers bloom around them.
Bunchabee	A small bee with a pointed head which appears in swarms.
Scatterpuff	Dandelions that can be scattered by walking through them. Their seed heads can take root on other objects, causing boulders to crack and enemies to stop moving.
Croakaoke	Squat duck-like creatures carrying leaves on their heads. They sing notes and can propel Yoshi to higher places when jumped on.
Glubbit	A frog-like creature with a mouth that resembles a bubble wand. It can create bubbles that Yoshi can enter.
Chapter 2: Mountaintops
	A umbrella-like bird creature that can be used by Yoshi to fall more slowly.
	A floating cloud with a face and small green wings.
	A turquoise creature with a pink nose.
	A giant green creature with plants growing over it and a large belly button.
Peckadee	A teardrop-shaped creature with gray, white and black stripes.
Milde	Round pink creatures that pop if stepped on. They can also be blown like bubblegum.
Chapter 3: Seaside
Casterway	A creature resembling a Spray Fish that uses its fishing rod to catch fish.
	A light blue fish resembling a balloon. It can boost Yoshi through the water by blowing bubbles from its fin.
	An urchin- or burr-like creature which sticks to surfaces.
Chapter 4: Settled Valley
Shy Guy	Masked, hooded creatures.
	A purple fly-like creature with huge lips that uses watermelons as armor and spits seeds.
Little Mouser	A purple rat thief who can steal objects and creatures from Yoshi's back.
	A pink bird with a tall neck spinning a hula hoop.
Other creatures
	A skateboard-like creature that can carry Yoshi over water.
	A smaller version of the skateboard-like creature that is collected by Yoshi.
	A large purple fish.
	Smaller red and blue fish that swim in groups.
	Pink fish that give coin-like glyphs when touched.
	A creature resembling a pink hang glider with orange wings. Yoshi can use it to glide through the air.
Hauger	A large creature with a red mane which can be ridden by Yoshi. It can jump high in the air and rotate its face like a drill.
	A snail which leaves a trail of slime where it walks. When touched, it uncoils and sticks up in the air.
Goonie	Seagulls with short round bodies and long wings which can carry Yoshi.
	A fish- or shark-like creature which digs through dirt by eating it.
	An orange goo-like creature which can cling to ceilings while being carried by Yoshi.
	A small green creature with a spout-like mouth which can shoot water.
	A green net-like creature with teeth that can be swung down to eat other creatures.
