Javelin Throw Plus is a Plus Event that appears in the Nintendo 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The objective of the event is to achieve the highest total distance by throwing as many javelins as possible. The playable characters for this event are Mario, Wario, Dry Bowser, Sonic, Knuckles, Omega, and Mii, with Dry Bowser unlocked by beating him in the event on the fifth day of Sonic's story in the Road to Rio mode. Toads and Charmy appear as referees in this event.
Gameplay
In this event, the player has three attempts to achieve the largest total distance from their javelins. To start each attempt, the player must slide left and right on the Touch Screen to build up speed, and once enough speed has been built up, lift the stylus to lock the speed. The faster the player slides, the faster the character accelerates; however, if the player does not stop sliding and lock their speed before the line, they will commit a foul and no distance will be recorded for that attempt. Once the character's speed is locked, the player can begin throwing javelins by sliding on the screen at a specific angle determined by the wind speed and direction. If the wind is blowing towards the player, the angle will be decreased from 45°, whereas if the wind is coming from behind, the angle will be increased. The exact angle is decided by the wind speed, with no wind leaving the ideal angle at 45°, a light wind between 1 and 3 m/s changing the angle by up to 6°, a strong wind between 4 and 6m/s changing the angle between 7 and 12°, and a gale between 7 and 9m/s changing the ideal angle by more than 13°. The player is given the ideal angle as well as the wind conditions before each run up. When sliding, the player can make multiple throws by repeatedly sliding the stylus; however, they will receive a foul if their first throw's angle is too steep. The player can continue to throw javelins up until they reach the foul line, at which point their character will automatically stop, with each javelin throw being rated as the player draws the line on the Touch Screen. The rating of the throw depends on how close to the ideal angle the throw was, with lines within 3° of the ideally angled line being rated "Perfect", 10° rating "Great", and 15° rating "Good", with angles outside of that not being rated. Lines that are significantly too steep will not be thrown. After the javelins have all been thrown and landed, the player will be shown the individual distance of each javelin in rounded metres, before being told the total distance achieved and the number thrown.
Advice
- Fouls happen more often when you slide more during the run up, but you can also throw the javelin farther.
- Stop sliding during the run up to lock your speed. Move the stylus away quickly once you've filled the gauge.
- When you throw the javelin, both the angle and length of the line are important. Try to draw a long, straight line.
