World 3-1 is the first level of World 3 in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. It is a snowy level which introduces a new penguin-like enemy, the Cooligan. It also introduces a new power-up, the Penguin Suit, which allows players to shoot ice balls, move more easily on icy surfaces, and swim more easily. Completing this course unlocks World 3-2.

Layout[edit]

The level starts with ? Blocks and Cooligans coming towards the players from the right. Past the Cooligans are bumpy ice platforms along with two Piranha Plants and a ? Block containing a Penguin Suit. Past this area are Koopa Troopas and more Cooligans, along with the midway point and a Warp Pipe. The Warp Pipe leads to a new area with a Red Ring and another ? Block containing a Penguin Suit. The players can slide along an icy roller coaster-like track using the Penguin Suit to collect the Red Coins and reach the pole while jumping to avoid more Cooligans and Koopa Troopas.

Star Coins[edit]

A Penguin Suit is required for all three Star Coins.

  • Star Coin 1: After the first two green pipes from which Piranha Plants emerge, Mario and co. must penguin-slide on the ice and crash through a series of bricks into the first Star Coin.
  • Star Coin 2: To the right of the midway point are two routes, the bottom one housing the second Star Coin. Mario and co. must freeze the Piranha Plant that emerges from the green pipe below, then use it as a surface to land on after jumping to the Star Coin.
  • Star Coin 3: Not far from the Warp Pipe leading to the second half of the level is a green pipe blocked off by two bricks. Mario and co. must penguin-slide through these bricks and enter the pipe, which leads to an underground area with a yellow pipe continually spawning Cooligans. Mario and co. must freeze an incoming Cooligan and use it as a moving platform to ride towards the pit, then jump back up to safety, grabbing the third Star Coin in the process. If Mario and co. do not have Penguin Suits, they can run and wall-jump to safety to get the Star Coin.
