Valley of Bowser 3 is the fourth default stage of the Valley of Bowser from Super Mario World. The player can gain access to this level by completing Valley Ghost House. This level can easily be completed with the Cape Feather and some jumps, as most of the enemies here can simply be stomped over so Mario (or Luigi) can progress without much use of the platforms. This level contains collapsing platforms called Count-Lifts on which Mario must jump. They last for one second or four seconds and appear only in this level. This level is the only normal level in this world that uses the athletic theme as opposed to the standard underground theme, despite the fact that it takes place underground. The tileset, however, is of the athletic theme.

Overview

Map of the level

Mario has a total of 300 seconds on the timer to complete this level, and it takes place in a cavern, with several tall platforms by a long abyss. The stage focuses on the use of several Count-Lifts, so Mario must jump from one to another to avoid falling in the pit.

Mario begins the level in a long cyan platform, with three jumping Koopa Paratroopas near the edge of it. After some small platforms with a Prize Block on it and a jumping Koopa Paratroopa, Mario finds the first Count-Lifts of the stage, all of them lasting only one second. Mario eventually finds the first Dragon Coin of the level, near a Koopa Paratroopa. If Mario has a cape, he can easily defeat the Koopa Paratroopas and use them as stepping stones to reach a nearby tall platform, where two Dragon Coins can be found. Right after the third Dragon Coin, Mario finds two yellow pipes blocking the way, with only a straight passage between them, where a Koopa Troopa hinders Mario. Using some Count-Lifts, Mario eventually reaches solid ground, where he can find the Midway Gate of the level if he uses a nearby Jumping Board.

Ahead of the Midway Gate are some jumping Koopa Paratroopas and more Count-Lifts. A Dragon Coin can be found near a Koopa Paratroopa, below a four-second Count-Lift. Mario must dodge Banzai Bills being fired in his direction, while jumping and using the Count-Lifts. The last Dragon Coin of the level can be found near a Banzai Bill. Mario can collect a 1-Up Mushroom if he uses a Count-Lift to reach a couple of blocks in the air. After this, Mario finds the Giant Gate, ending the level.

Early ideas

The unused Red Switch Palace, at Valley of Bowser.
The unused Red Switch Palace in the Valley of Bowser, which would be accessible from a secret exit of this level in early development

An unused secret exit would have led to a similarly unused Red Switch Palace. This level, though, was scrapped and cannot be normally accessed since Valley of Bowser 3 does not have a secret exit, and entering via hacking leads Mario to an endless bonus game.
