Mecha Sonic[1] is a crossover character from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. He is a robot replica of Sonic, similar to Metal Sonic, but usually depicted as bulkier and with less personality. He originally appeared as a late boss in both the 8-bit and 16-bit editions of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and then appeared as a major antagonist in Sonic & Knuckles, with each game using a different design.

Mecha Sonic appears briefly in the Super Mario franchise within the game Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 as a boss in the Tokyo Sky Flight minigame found in the Story Mode and the Game Room. His boss fight is similar to his one from the 16-bit Sonic the Hedgehog 2, where his sprite is borrowed from, which has Mecha Sonic spinning around in a ball form, then shooting out spikes. As a ball, he homes in on the player, and when he lands, he stands on either the street level or the building as a platform. Both rolled and unrolled forms are vulnerable to shots.
