- —Electronic manual, New Super Mario Bros. 2
Gold Rings are objects that appear in New Super Mario Bros. 2. They are similar in appearance to the coin rings from Super Mario 3D Land and Super Mario 3D World. If Mario (or Luigi) passes through a Gold Ring, all enemies turn golden, twinkling effects are added to the game screen, and the music slightly changes with "sparkly" sounds added to it. If Mario is in his Gold form, he earns more coins than usual.
Most golden enemies leave trails of coins behind as they move, or even throw coins instead of their usual projectiles. Five coins are given for each defeated enemy; if multiple enemies are defeated consecutively (either by stomping on them without touching the ground or by using a Koopa Shell), the number of coins earned increases to 10, 15, and 20 for the second, third, and fourth enemies, respectively. After four enemies, 50 coins are given for each consecutive enemy. These values are doubled under the influence of both Gold Mario and the Gold Ring. However, in the E3 trailer of New Super Mario Bros. 2, only five coins were given, even when golden enemies were defeated in succession.
The following table lists how enemies are affected by Gold Rings:
Name | Description |
---|---|
Boo / Big Boo | Becomes a Gold Boo or Gold Big Boo; leaves behind coins as it floats away from Mario/Luigi. |
Bullet Bill / Banzai Bill | Becomes a Gold Bullet Bill or a Gold Banzai Bill; leaves rows of coins behind as it flies, similar to Gold Koopa Troopa shells. |
Bull's-Eye Billa | Leaves rows of coins behind as it flies, similar to Koopa Troopas. Sometimes gets stuck facing the wrong direction if turned to gold onscreen. |
Leaping Cheep Cheep | Becomes a Gold Cheep Cheep; has a trail of five coins following it as it leaps out of the water. |
Goomba / Paragoomba / Mini Goombab / Goomba Tower | Becomes a Gold Goomba, Gold Paragoomba, Gold Mini Goomba, or Gold Goomba Tower but acts just like normal. |
Bill Blaster / Banzai Bill Cannon | Turns gold but acts just like normal. |
Piranha Plant / Big Piranha Plant | Becomes a Gold Piranha Plant or Gold Big Piranha Plant; if it is within a pipe, it causes a large number of coins to shower from said pipe for a short period upon defeat, but otherwise acts the same. |
Hammer Bro / Boomerang Bro / Fire Bro | Becomes a Gold Bro; throws three coins at a time. |
Koopa Troopa / Koopa Paratroopa | Becomes a Gold Koopa Troopa or a Gold Koopa Paratroopa; leaves a trail of coins behind in its wake when its shell is kicked. |
Lakitu | Becomes a Gold Lakitu; drops three coins at a time, similar to Lakitus that spawn from square clouds in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. |
Lakitu's Cloud | When ridden, the cloud generates coins in a way similar to the Gold Block. |
Spiny | Turns into coins, much like the silver P Switch's effects on them in Super Mario World. |
Bone Goombac | Uses Gold Goomba model, otherwise unchanged. |
