Splunkins[1] are jack-o'-lantern enemies in New Super Mario Bros. Splunkins are encountered in World 3-Ghost House, World 5-Ghost House, World 7-Ghost House, and World 8-1. They walk along the ground like Goombas. When Splunkins are stomped, the cracks on their bodies deepen and they walk faster. Stomping one a second time defeats the Splunkin. Ground-pounding Splunkins or striking them with fireballs defeats them in one hit. Their English name is a portmanteau of "spelunking" (meaning exploring a cave) and "punkin" (a regional slurring of the word "pumpkin").
