Splunkins[1] are jack-o-lantern enemies in New Super Mario Bros. They walk left and right. If Mario jumps on a Splunkin once, it cracks slightly and increases its movement speed. Jumping on a Splunkin a second time causes it to explode, defeating it and earning points. However, a Ground Pound or a fireball defeats a Splunkin instantly. They are sometimes found in larger groups. They appear in World 3-Ghost House, World 5-Ghost House, World 7-Ghost House, and World 8-1.
Their name is likely a pun on "spelunking" and "punkin," which is slang for "pumpkin".
