Spike Basses[1] are aquatic enemies in New Super Mario Bros. that resemble giant porcupinefish. These enemies also have beaming yellow eyes, sharp teeth, and spikes all over their body. The Spike Bass is encountered only in World 2-A and World 3-C, where it jumps from the water and tries to attack Mario or Luigi similarly to Boss Bass but without attempting to eat them. There is a finite height to which the Spike Bass can jump, meaning its attacks can be avoided by standing on a platform with substantial elevation above the water. The Spike Bass can be defeated from either a fireball, a Koopa Shell, a Starman, or a Mega Mushroom, though it will respawn a few seconds later. Later games give this enemy's behavior to Porcupuffer, which does not jump in earlier appearances.
