"Mega Mario"[1] is a musical theme composed by Asuka Hayazaki that first appears in New Super Mario Bros. The theme plays when the player collects a Mega Mushroom and continues playing throughout the duration of power-up's effects. The theme has reappeared in several games since its original appearance, though it has continued to be exclusively associated with the Mega Mushroom.

Reuses[edit]

Game Description
Mario Kart Wii The theme plays when the player uses a Mega Mushroom.
New Super Mario Bros. 2 The theme plays when the player collects a Mega Mushroom.
Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury The theme plays when a player collects a Mega Mushroom.

Arrangements[edit]

Mario Kart Wii[edit]

Mario Kart Wii extensively showcases the doppler effect, which is a real-world phenomenon where the pitch of a sound is distorted when the object omitting the sound is moving at a different speed than the object receiving the sound. As a result, when the player passes or is passed by an opponent with a Mega Mushroom, the pitch of the theme will be distorted as they move closer or further away from the player.

Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash[edit]

In Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash, a metal arrangement of "Mega Mario" plays when a player collects a Mega Mushroom.

Mario Party series[edit]

Mario Party: The Top 100[edit]

In Mario Party: The Top 100, an arrangement of "Mega Mario" plays during the Mush Pit minigame when a player collects a Mega Mushroom, replacing the Starman arrangement heard in Mario Party 3.

Mario Party Superstars[edit]

Like Mario Party: The Top 100, Mario Party Superstars features a new arrangement of "Mega Mario" that plays in Mush Pit when a player collects a Mega Mushroom.

Other arrangements[edit]

Super Mario Series for Guitar - Super Best[edit]

A solo guitar arrangement of the theme titled 「巨大BGM」 (Kyodai BGM, "Giant BGM") and arranged by Satoshi Aikawa is featured in the Super Mario Series for Guitar - Super Best sheet music book.
