Cheep Cheep in Super Mario Sunshine
An alternate angle of a Hatopop

Hatopops[1], also called Cheep Cheeps[2], are green, penguin-like birds that appear in Super Mario Sunshine. Their name is likely derived from hato, the Japanese name for pigeons and doves, and the popping action they perform. They are only found in Noki Bay. They are hidden in wall indents with no indication that they are there (barring a question mark showing up within the wall if the player tilts the camera properly). If Mario walks close enough to them, they immediately charge at him, knocking him away. They then linger for a bit of time before retreating into the wall and completely disappearing. There is no way to avoid being hit by them without completely avoiding the locations they appear in. Due to how they look and act, they are comparable to the birds inside of cuckoo clocks. Similar red boxing gloves known as Punchers[2] appear from other alcoves. Both have wooden crisscrossed Ultra Hand-like bars behind them.
