Swallowing, also called eating or gobbling, appears in the Super Mario franchise as one of Yoshi's most common moves. In most Yoshi games starting with Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, after catching an enemy with his tongue and swallowing, Yoshi can turn it into an egg. He can also spit an enemy back out, and it defeats another enemy upon contact. In the Super Smash Bros. series, this move is called Egg Lay, and the spitting move is used for Yoshi's throws.
Swallowing in Super Mario Sunshine is used to eat fruit to refuel a Yoshi's stomach. Yoshi also eats fruit in other games, such as Super Mario World and New Super Mario Bros. Wii. In Super Mario World, when a Baby Yoshi eats five berries, it becomes an adult Yoshi, and eating ten fruits makes Yoshi lay an egg holding a power-up. In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, New Super Mario Bros. U, New Super Luigi U, and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, only five fruits are needed to have Yoshi produce a power-up.
