- —Grumpy Kong, Donkey Kong Bananza
Grumpy Kong is the orangutan-like director of manufacturing of Void Company in Donkey Kong Bananza. He has red fur, wields a pickaxe, and wears mining attire. Grumpy Kong is responsible for creating monsters such as Peekabruiser to guard routes deeper into the planet.[1] During his boss battle, he operates the King Crockoid,[2] a giant Crockoid made up of various Crockoid skeletons mixed together.
In the postgame, he can be found in the Ingot Isle Cave-In and Groove Layer with Poppy Kong, with whom he has started a construction company. He also appears at the end of the Forbidden Layer, where he gives Donkey Kong a Banandium Gem after Donkey Kong talks to Poppy Kong about Void Kong surviving the events of King K. Rool's return.
He later appears in the Emerald Rush mode's ending. After Void Kong admits that his true aim for the emeralds was to restore the Pay-Dirt Piledriver, Grumpy Kong informs Pauline and Donkey Kong that he sabotaged it and made it unable to leave the island, having anticipated Void Kong's trickery from his prior employment under him.
General information[edit]
Physical description[edit]
Grumpy Kong is a large Kong, towering over Donkey Kong himself. He has gray skin with purple eyebags, tiny orange irises and crooked teeth. He has red fur covering his arms and on his head, styled like sideburns.
Appearance[edit]
Grumpy Kong's outfit resembles a miner or construction worker's. He wears a pair of dark brown denim pants, a yellow toolbelt with black hazard stripes, a gray shirt, a short-sleeved green jacket with a Void Company patch on the sleeve, a pair of yellow-and-purple gloves and a yellow miner's helmet. He wields a large pickaxe that is stylised like a wrench, with a jagged yellow blade and an orange hilt.
Personality[edit]
Grumpy Kong exhibits a stoic, gruff demeanor. He is very diligent about his work, quickly assembling weapons to further the company's goal and obstruct DK's progress. He expresses pride in his craftsmanship. Grumpy Kong has a strong sense of respect for those who can best him, as despite his commitment to stopping DK, he willingly steps aside to let his adversary progress when he is defeated.
Quotes[edit]
- "You got it, Boss."
- "Can't let you two slow down the boss's progress... This oughta do the job."
- (After defeating Peekabruiser) "Ya beat my best work. Can't believe it. The boss gave me direct orders to capture ya... so... I'll finish the job next time. Bet on it!"
- "Here they are... Time to finish the job!"
- (After defeating the King Crockoid) "Ya beat me fair and square. Go on, take what's yours."
- (After defeating the King Crockoid) "My best wasn't good enough... again... At least I slowed ya both down. While ya trashed my hard work, the boss dug closer to the Planet Core... I'll finish the job next time. Bet on it!"
- "'Bout time you showed up... Let's get to work!"
- (After defeating Re-Peekabruiser) "I fined-tuned, souped up, streamlined... but I was still no match for you. You two ain't half bad, you know that? Our next scrape's gonna be the one though. I can feel it... I'll finish the job next time! You can bet your entire life savings on it!"
- "This is gonna be a career highlight... Lemme show ya TRUE craftsmanship!"
- "Guess it's... time to... clock out..."
- "Well, well! If it ain't DK. I caused a heap of trouble for ya back when I was workin' for the boss... But that's water under the bridge now, right? We're all friends here."
- "Been makin' myself useful while you've been gone. I patched up this here hole, fer instance. I also tried my hand at makin' somethin' you'd probably recognize."
- "It's one of them Warp Gong things. I set it up in the crater through here. If ya have a minute, do me a solid... Go make sure it's workin' right, will ya? It was a satisfying challenge. Take a look - appreciate the craftsmanship."
- "I'm sure you're gonna go appreciate the craftsmanship right now.. right? If you don't go appreciate it... I might have to show ya how much I don't appreciate YOU."
- "Hey there, DK. Pauline. Poppy and I teamed up to start our own construction company."
- "Say... you wouldn't be interested in funding some construction projects around here, wouldja? It won't cost much - just a piddly bit of gold... and it'll buy quality work."
- "Parts and labor will cost ya 5000/10,000/120,000 gold."
- (After paying Grumpy the required gold) "You've got yerself a deal, DK! Time to go to work!"
- "Battle Rush is open for business! It's a whole mess of Battle Challenges, back-to-back-to-back. Go on, try it out. Might even earn yourself some bananas.
- "I've got another big-time construction project in mind... I'd need you to invest another piddly bit of gold... but you'll be buyin' even higher quality work than last time."
- "Boss Rush is open for business! It's a big ol' gauntlet of boss battles, back-to-back-to-back. Hop on in there. Give it a go. Earn a few more bananas."
- "Sure do! My mind's made up... I'm ready for the biggest construction project of my whole career... This right here is gonna be the site of the Baboomtown Restoration Project - now open for funding! I ain't gonna sugarcoat it... This one's gonna cost way more gold than the other projects. A bold Kong like you ain't gonna back down from an investment opportunity like this... are ya?"
- "ALLLLLLRIGHT! THIS IS SERIOUS MONKEY BUSINESS! LET'S GET TO WOOOOOORK!"
- "Whaddya think? Good as new, eh? If you take a look around, ya might even find a surprise or two."
- "The top bit felt like it wanted a little somethin' extra, y'know? It kept tuggin' at me, so I took the initiative. I figured it's a good spot for a tribute to the no-good musclehead who punched right through everyone's problems."
- "I put a lot of hard work into this one. Go on - appreciate that craftsmanship."
- Groove Layer (post-game)
- "We agreed to come down here and rebuild the speaker, but... turns out these singin' rocks ain't got the cash. I ain't greedy... but I also ain't workin' for free. All told, parts and labor are gonna cost 20,000 gold..."
- (After paying Grumpy 20,000 gold) "You're footin' the bill for these singin' rocks? Well, ain't that somethin'!"
- "I like your gumption! Got me itchin' get to work!"
- "The speaker is back in business!"
- "Don't suppose you've got a disc collection handy, do ya? I built a DJ booth by the big speaker so you can blast your favorite tunes."
- Forbidden Layer (post-game)
- "Oh. Hey. You two down here lookin' for something? Us too. I'm guessin' the boss caused a lot of trouble around here. No surprise. Look, this ain't an apology or nothin', but... uh... here. Just take this."
- "I know the boss was a pain in the neck to you guys, but... workin' for him meant a lot to me. Ambition like his is rare, y'know?"
- "Howdy, you two. Let me guess... our old boss hornswoggled ya into helping him out, right? Don't you worry. That dirt pile of his won't be flyin' anytime soon. I made a li'l adjustment under the hood, so to speak. Yep. This ol' clunker will stay parked in your front yard for a gooood, looong while."
- "Whatever funny business he tries to pull next, we'll be ready to stop him. We did a lot of the dirty work for him, after all. We know his tricks."
