- —Ludwig, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey
Negotiate is a first officer command used by Ludwig in the Bowser Jr.'s Journey mode of Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey. It is Ludwig's first command, the second being Stop and Drop. It costs 6 CP to use. Once activated, Ludwig will run up to a random enemy and attempt to deceive and condescend them into leaving the battle. If successful, the enemy will leave the battle; if the enemy can join the player's squad, then after completing the quest the enemy will be recruited. If this is not effective, the enemy will remain in the battle and Ludwig will receive temporary increases to his ACCURACY and POW instead. Negotiate will always fail against units poisoned with Malatone Formula:X, enemy First Officers, or enemy Captains. This is one of the two Captain Commands not known by any enemies in the game, the other being Coddle.
In the quest The Best Beast, Nabbit is part of the enemy squad. The only way to get Nabbit to join the player's squad is by having Ludwig use Negotiate on Nabbit.
Quotes[edit]
During the move, Ludwig has unique dialogue that can be hard to read because of the short amount of time each text box is displayed, as well as the text boxes overlapping and covering each other. Here are all quotes. The game has separate groups of dialogue to use if the enemy can or cannot join the player's squad. During Negotiate, eight lines of dialog are used by Ludwig. A random line is picked from the appropriate list to start, then the next seven lines are picked by moving down the list, looping from the last entry to the first entry of the list if needed. This means that if Negotiate is used against a non-recruitable unit and Ludwig opens with "Think this through.", then he will always say "What are your terms?" next, then "If you won't join us, leave now!", and so on until finishing with "Fine, do your own thing." as the eighth line. The lists of dialogue below are in the order the game uses for determining what to use next.

- Commands entry for Negotiate: "A command that Ludwig can use. He will attempt to negotiate with a single foe. If successful, the enemy will leave the battle. Additionally, some enemies will actually join your side if the negotiation is successful. The weaker the enemy, the more likely Ludwig is to succeed."
