While Africa does not appear directly in ''[[Super Mario Land]]'', the first world of the game, the [[Birabuto Kingdom]], is directly based on ancient Egypt. The desert kingdom features pyramids, palm trees, hieroglyphs, and sphinx-like enemies known as [[Gao]], including the final boss of the world, [[King Totomesu]], which are all inspired by Egypt. In addition, the American commercial for ''Super Mario Land'' encouraged the player to "challenge the mysteries and terrors of Ancient Egypt" while describing the Birabuto Kingdom.
