Variant of Shy Guy

Spy Guys are a type of Shy Guy encountered in Paper Mario. They appear exclusively in Shy Guy's Toy Box. Spy Guys are dressed in camouflage gear, wearing a leafy bush with flowers on their heads as a disguise. They resemble Petal Guys from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. They hold either a slingshot or hammer in their hand.

Spy Guys were originally going to reappear in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, but were cut from the game. Their "command_heiho" name remains in the game's coding.[1]

Battle

They can attack Mario with a slingshot outside and inside of battle; the long range of this attack gives Spy Guys an advantage in scoring a First Strike, and conversely good at avoiding Mario's own attempts. Whenever a Spy Guy is damaged, it changes weapons, altering between slingshot and hammer. If Mario fails to guard against a hammer attack, he suffers the Prohibited Command status effect and loses one of his action commands for several turns. Unlike other Shy Guys, when a Spy Guy is defeated, they will sit on the floor rather than continue their "damaged" animation.
