''Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition'' features three single-player modes — Speedrun Mode, World Championships, and Survival Mode, the multiplayer Party Mode,<ref name=Treehouse>{{cite|author=Nintendo of America|date=July 3, 2024|url=https://youtu.be/KHjJ2FqzvHc|title=Nintendo Treehouse Plays Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition — Nintendo Switch|language=en-us|publisher=YouTube|accessdate=July 4, 2024}}</ref> and the unlockable Legendary Trial.
''Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition'' features three single-player modes — Speedrun Mode, World Championships, and Survival Mode, the multiplayer Party Mode, and the unlockable Legendary Trial.

In Speedrun Mode, players compete in over 150 challenges that entail completing a specific action in an NES game in the fastest amount of time possible, such as reaching a goal, collecting an item, or defeating a boss or group of enemies. Each challenge has a difficulty level rated on a scale of one to five stars (however no challenge is rated as two stars), and the player is assigned a letter rank based on how fast they completed the challenge. While a challenge is being played, a timer is displayed at the bottom-left corner of the screen; the player's personal best time and button inputs are also displayed on the left, and their profile (which displays their set name, icon, and favorite NES game) on the right. If the player loses, the game automatically rewinds to before they lost, though the timer will continue counting up.<ref name=Overview>{{cite|author=Nintendo of America|date=July 11, 2024|url=https://youtu.be/wW3rNlfRgyM|title=Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition — Overview Trailer — Nintendo Switch|language=en-us|publisher=YouTube|accessdate=July 11, 2024}}</ref> Before a challenge, the player can view a demo video that shows how the challenge is played or a replay of their personal best run; for five star-difficulty challenges, the player can also view "classified information", which contains a visual guide showing how the player can complete them.<ref name=June2024Direct/>
In Speedrun Mode, players compete in 156 challenges (66 of which being ''[[Super Mario (franchise)|Super Mario]]'' challenges), that entail completing a specific action in an NES game in the fastest amount of time possible, such as reaching a goal, collecting an item, or defeating a boss or group of enemies. Each challenge has a difficulty level rated on a scale of one to five stars ("Normal" for one, "Hard" for three, "Master" for four, and "Legend" for five; no challenge exists at a two-star difficulty), and the player is assigned a letter rank based on how fast they completed the challenge. While a challenge is being played, a timer is displayed at the bottom-left corner of the screen; the player's personal best time and button inputs are also displayed on the left, and their profile on the right. [[Coin]]s are awarded for completing challenges, which are used to unlock more challenges. The number of coins earned depends on the challenge's difficulty and the player's rank. In the Legendary Trial, a mode unlocked once all 156 Challenges are completed, the player speedruns through all thirteen Legend-difficulty challenges to achieve the best time. The mode features speedrun splits and, on repeat playthroughs, notifies the player how much faster or slower they were on a specific challenge. To achieve an S rank, the player must have a total time of less than 28 minutes.

Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition is a game for Nintendo Switch based on the Nintendo World Championships competitions, released on July 18, 2024. Similar to the NES Remix series, the game revolves around completing challenges based on various first-party Nintendo Entertainment System titles, including games from the Super Mario franchise such as Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong, and Super Mario Bros. 3. The game was revealed on May 8, 2024, in a trailer that featured past winners and participants of the Nintendo World Championships.[20]

Gameplay[edit]

Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition features three single-player modes — Speedrun Mode, World Championships, and Survival Mode, the multiplayer Party Mode, and the unlockable Legendary Trial.

In Speedrun Mode, players compete in 156 challenges (66 of which being Super Mario challenges), that entail completing a specific action in an NES game in the fastest amount of time possible, such as reaching a goal, collecting an item, or defeating a boss or group of enemies. If the player loses, the game automatically rewinds to before they lost, though the timer will continue counting up. Before a challenge, the player can view a demo video that shows how the challenge is played or a replay of their personal best run; for Legend-difficulty challenges, the player can also view "classified information", which contains a visual guide showing how the player can complete them.

Coins are awarded for completing challenges, which are used to unlock more challenges. The number of coins earned depends on the challenge's difficulty and the player's rank. Extra coins are also awarded for clearing certain objectives, such as achieving a new personal best time or participating in the World Championships.

In World Championships, players with a Nintendo Switch Online membership compete in a weekly set of five challenges and have their scores ranked on a global leaderboard.

Survival Mode is another online mode in which the player competes against ghost data of other players around the world in an elimination tournament consisting of three rounds: the first with the starting eight players, the second with the top four players, and the third with the top two players. The tournament has two divisions: a Silver Division and a more challenging Gold Division with higher-ranking players.

In Party Mode, up to eight players race against each other locally in challenges. They can choose to play a series of challenges in themed challenge packs or individual challenges.

Pins can also be earned when completing challenges with an A rank or higher or winning in the Survival Mode divisions for the first time, which the player can equip to their profile and display under the game screen during challenges. The player can also assign a player icon, their favorite NES or Famicom game, and a "Hype Tag" that describes themselves to their profile. Three of the Hype Tags reference the Super Mario franchise: "All About Mario", "Luigi Obsessed", and "Rescued by Peach".

Featured games[edit]

Thirteen NES games are featured, five of which are from the Super Mario franchise. Unlike the original Nintendo World Championships 1990, Rad Racer and Tetris do not appear.

Super Mario challenges[edit]

Super Mario Bros. 3 has the most challenges in the game, with 24. Super Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong are the only games that feature challenges that make the player go from the beginning to the end of the game (Mario Master and Kong Crusher, respectively); the former is also the longest challenge, with an estimated play time of 10 minutes.

Estimated play times are displayed in Party Mode.

Prohibited glitches[edit]
