Big Mario is the form Mario takes after obtaining a Big Mushroom in Super Mario Maker. Upon scanning 30th Anniversary Mario amiibo onto the Wii U GamePad's wiiu, a Big Mushroom will appear. It works only in Super Mario Bros. game style. With this form, Mario can break Brick Blocks and hard blocks by running into them at speed, as well as jumping onto them from above. Most enemies will be defeated instantly by stomping them. However, Mario is still vulnerable to enemy attacks. Depending on the scanned amiibo, Mario's appearance will be based on his original Super Mario Bros. sprite for the Classic Colors amiibo or his original sprite with modern colors for the Modern Colors amiibo. If Big Mario grabs a Big Mushroom of a different color, the Big Mushroom's color overrides Big Mario's (for example, collecting a Big Mushroom in classic colors as a modern colored Big Mario makes Big Mario gain classic colors).

Upon becoming Big Mario, several visual effects will change. Enemies will become Mario-themed, some wearing mustaches or Mario's cap, up to changing the appearance of other enemies altogether, such as Bullet Bills turning into miniature Luigis. The screen will also gain a filter that mimics the effect of a CRT television. These visual changes are purely aesthetic and do not alter gameplay, aside from Big Mario himself.

First appearance Super Mario Maker (2015)
Latest appearance Super Mario Maker 2 (2019)

Big Mario is the form Mario takes after obtaining a Big Mushroom, appearing in Super Mario Maker and Super Mario Maker 2. Big Mario is two blocks wide and two blocks tall, compared to Super Mario's size of one block wide and two blocks tall. Big Mario has the proportions of Small Mario. Big Mario increases Mario's ability to break blocks further than Super Mario, extending to ? Blocks, Empty Blocks, and Hard Blocks. Mario can only become Big Mario in courses that use the Super Mario Bros. game style.

In Super Mario Maker, a Big Mushroom appears after scanning 30th Anniversary Mario amiibo onto the Wii U GamePad's NFC sensor in the Course Maker. This can be done in courses that do not use the Super Mario Bros. style, but it changes the style of the course to Super Mario Bros. in the process. While the course's style can be changed after obtaining a Big Mushroom to put in the course, collecting a Big Mushroom in a course using a non-Super Mario Bros. game style only provides 1000 points.[1]

Big Mario can break blocks by running into them with some speed or as well as jumping onto them from above. Breaking a block by landing on it lightly bounces Mario upward and resets his jumping state, such that he does not break another block when he lands from this bounce. Mario can still break blocks by jumping into them. Most enemies are defeated instantly by Big Mario stomping them. If Big Mario takes damage, he reverts to Small Mario. Big Mario does not change forms after collecting a Super Mushroom or a Weird Mushroom, but does change form if he collects any other power-up.

Big Mario has two different color schemes, one that uses the colors of Mario's normal sprite and a second that uses modern colors established in Super Mario Bros. 3. The color scheme Big Mario has depends on the type of Big Mushroom he collected, and the type of Big Mushroom that he player obtains from scanning a 30th Anniversary Mario amiibo is based on which version of the amiibo they scanned. The Big Mushroom from the Classic Colors amiibo causes Big Mario to have the first color scheme, and the Big Mushroom from the Modern Colors amiibo has the second color scheme. If Big Mario collects a Big Mushroom of the type that does not correspond to his current color scheme, he becomes Big Mario again but with the color scheme corresponding to that Big Mushroom.[2]

These visual changes are purely aesthetic and do not alter gameplay.

In Super Mario Maker 2, Luigi, Toad, and Toadette can also use this form. The Big Mushoom is a standard power-up exclusive to the Super Mario Bros. game style, with no ties to amiibo. Only Big Mushrooms corresponding to the color scheme for modern colors appears, and none of the aesthetic effects from the previous game return. Big Mario now reverts to Super Mario if hit, rather than Small Mario. Unlike in the previous game, Big Mario cannot break blocks by running into them.

  • The modern version of Big Mario is also used for the Mario Mystery Mushroom costume. However, the two are different in that the Costume Mario version is given its own unique sound effects.
  • Many of the enemies affected by the Big Mushroom resemble those captured by Mario in Super Mario Odyssey.
    • Red Koopa Troopas resemble the red Roving Racer in their Big Mushroom form, and Bowser's appearance in the 8-bit section of the final boss sequence in Super Mario Odyssey also resembles his Big Mushroom form (though he does not have the cap in the latter).
