Hariet is one of the Broodals, a group of evil, rabbit-like wedding planners from the Moon in Super Mario Odyssey. The Broodals, working under Madame Broode are hired by Bowser to plan the wedding between Peach and himself. Her name is a variation of "Harriet" and may refer to "hare," a species related to rabbits, or the fact that she uses her hair to attack. She is the only female Broodal (not counting Madame Broode) and wears a purple strapless dress, gloves, pumps, and a purple fascinator with a little bow on it over the left side of her hair. She is the Broodal in charge of pyrotechnics displays.

Concept and creation

Two distinctive aspects of Hariet's design are the use of hair to attack Mario and the hard hat that protects her head. Hariet's bombs and hat are also stated to be of her own creation.

Hariet had several appearances initially considered for Super Mario Odyssey. Some examples include a bridesmaid, a crocodile, a bird, a Lochlady, a circus performer, a bodyguard princess, and recurring established enemies like with a Koopa, an ancient Koopa Troopa, and a Buzzy Beetle.

Hariet in the Sand Kingdom

In Super Mario Odyssey, Hariet is fought atop the Inverted Pyramid in the Sand Kingdom in the objective Showdown on the Inverted Pyramid; this objective only starts after completing Moon Shards in the Sand in the Moe-Eye Habitat, as that objective opens the Inverted Pyramid. When Mario and Cappy reach the pyramid's top where Bowser's Airship hovers, Bowser escapes while the Broodals' Airship arrives. Hariet says a few words revealing that Bowser has already retrieved the Binding Band before Mario and Cappy arrived as well as tauntingly telling them that they are uninvited from the ceremony, puts on a spiky sunbonnet-shaped helmet, and jumps off the Airship, attempting to fight them.

In the fight, Hariet throws spiky bombs resembling cacti at Mario using her braid, with some time between each toss. She generally tries to keep a certain distance away from Mario as she shifts about, so walking forward means she moves backward. Mario can knock away her bombs by hitting them with Cappy, launching them in an arc in the opposite direction Cappy hit from. The bombs leave puddles of lava when they explode on the ground, but do not if they get knocked away (bombs that Cappy hits never land before exploding). After a while, if Mario does not hit Hariet, she throws a much larger bomb which is attached to her hair and gets stuck in the ground. The lava it leaves is larger, but when these bombs are hit, they whirl around Hariet and collide with her irrespective of how Cappy hit them. She does not act while the bomb is stuck, but after it explodes, she starts her attacks over. When Hariet gets hit by a bomb, she loses her protective helmet, allowing Mario to jump onto her head to score a hit. If left alone long enough, Hariet will put on a new hat and start again. If she gets hit, she instead puts on a new helmet, withdraws into it, and starts flying around as an UFO while dropping numerous bombs onto the battlefield. She only moves in straight lines, dropping up to three bombs per dash. When these bombs are struck, they bounce straight up before exploding. Hariet laughs manically for this phase. After a while or when she gets hit by a bomb, she returns to normal and repeats the pattern from the start. However, her vulnerable state now has her run away from Mario. After each hit, she drops ten coins, and after the third hit, she is defeated and disappears in a cloud of smoke, leaving behind a Multi Moon.

Hariet is fought a second time in Bowser's Kingdom. She once again taunts Mario and Cappy for being uninvited from the wedding and attacks. This time, she has two braids, allowing her to throw two bombs at once. The strategy to defeat her remains the same, however. She also helps pilot the giant robot, RoboBrood.

The final fight with her is on the Dark Side of the moon, where she is the second Broodal fought (after Topper and with the next two being Spewart and Rango). She scolds Mario and Cappy for barging into the Broodals' kingdom and says that she still has things to teach them. Aside from the moon's different gravity, the fight is the same as in Bowser's Kingdom. She also helps pilot the RoboBrood in its second fight against Mario (also on the Dark Side), in a fight quite similar to the one in Bowser's Kingdom.

Hariet is the only Broodal to wear a different hat than anywhere else in her battles. She is also the only Broodal whose battles require the use of Cappy to finish.

As of August 1, 2018, the player can purchase a costume based on Hariet at the Crazy Cap shop. Its corresponding hat is a sunbonnet, rather than a fascinator. When Mario encounters Bowser in the Moon Kingdom while in the Hariet Suit and the Hariet Hat, he will say, "Also, you look amazing! Love the outfit!" before telling him that he is uninvited from the wedding ceremony.

The least predictable of the Broodals, Hariet is most often found throwing bombs with her hair. When her homemade bombs explode, they leave a pool of fire on the ground, so try knocking them away before they explode. While it may seem reckless to have filled her hat with bombs, Hariet is devious and keeps a lot of spare explosives with her, so watch out!
