Taunt is a move used in the Super Smash Bros., Mario Party, Mario Golf, and Mario Tennis series.
Taunt is a move used in the Mario Party, Mario Golf, and Mario Tennis series, and the Super Smash Bros. series. They typically do not have direct gameplay impact, but serve to annoy or cheer on the players. In the Mario Party series, each character has a taunt – however, in Mario Party 6, 7, and 8, it is unlockable. In the Mario Golf series, when an opponent is about to hit a ball, the player can taunt the opponent – though this also has no in-game effect. If one human player is playing against another human, the taunt may distract the other player. The player can also cheer for the opponents in the Mario Golf series.

In the Super Smash Bros. series, this move is typically done as a way to brag after KO-ing another player. Unlike other taunts, Luigi's down taunt (which can meteor smash opponents), Snake's taunts, Greninja's down taunt, and Kazuya's side taunt are the only ones capable of harming an opponent character, though the first three only deal approximately 1% damage. Kirby's copied ability after using his Inhale will disappear after he taunts. If Samus quickly performs her taunts ↑↓↑ in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, she will turn into Zero Suit Samus instantly. Doing the same thing as Zero Suit Samus will cause her to revert back to normal Samus with her Power Suit back on.

Mario Party 6
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, players are able to taunt once again, but instead of just one taunt in the previous games, nearly every character has three different taunts in this installment, except for Wario, who has four. However, during Wi-Fi mode, the taunt can be used for an even greater use. When players press one of the directions on the Control Pad during Wi-Fi mode, the characters will not only taunt, but a small speech bubble will appear above them, with a quote that the players set. Players can create any quote they want, and they can set four at one time, with each button on the Control Pad activating a different quote. However, this only works in the "With Friends" mode of Wi-Fi; in "With Anyone" mode, the taunt quotes do not work.
In Mario Party 6, the taunts for each character can be bought individually with Stars at the Star Bank. Pressing the gcn button on the GameCube Controller causes the player's character to taunt during Party Mode. The voice clips heard vary by character.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, several taunts have been changed. For example, Mario now throws Cappy in his side taunt instead of simply taking off his cap, while the Koopalings use their wands from New Super Mario Bros. Wii in their side taunts, rather than hammers like Bowser Jr. Some returning taunts have been shortened, sped up, or simplified compared to previous installments (for example, Bayonetta's up taunt ends before she finishes the line "If you need to learn how to talk to a lady, ask your mum."), while several characters such as Marth and Zelda now have more voices while taunting.
Mario Party 7
In Mario Party 7, there is an unlockable feature known as "Annoy Mode", which causes the player's character to taunt during Party Mode when they press the gcn button on the GameCube Controller. The voice clips heard vary by character, and most of them are reused from Mario Party 6. To unlock it, the player must purchase it for 500 Cruise Mileage Points at the Duty-Free Shop.

In the Mario Party series, each character has a taunt – however, in Mario Party 6, 7, and 8, it is unlockable. This taunt does nothing useful, and the player just shouts something to a character. In the Mario Golf series, when an opponent is about to hit a ball, the player can taunt the opponent – though this also has no in-game effect. If one human player is playing against another human, the taunt may distract the other player. The player can also cheer for the opponents in the Mario Golf series.
Mario Party 8
br
In Mario Party 8, there is an unlockable feature known as "Heckling Voices", which causes the player's character to taunt during Party Mode when they shake the Wii Remote. The voice clips heard vary by character, but each character has two voice clips. One voice clip known as "Boo" can be heard in the Carnival Calliope Character Voices. Heckling Voices costs fifty Carnival Cards at the Fun Bazaar.

Smash Taunts
Dr. Mario
Smash Taunting is a taunt available only to Snake, Pit and the Star Fox characters. This technique helps the player communicate with the player's allies.
*Since Super Smash Bros. Melee: Dr. Mario tosses a Megavitamin of a random color, then grabs it in mid-air.
*Since Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U:
**Grinds his shoe on the ground.
**Pats his shoulder.

To activate it, the player must execute a down taunt for one frame; however, the taunt only works on specific stages when the player is controlling a specific character.
Wario
Since Super Smash Bros. Brawl:
*He laughs, drops his jaw, then pushes it up.
*He shakes his rear at the camera, while making taunting sounds.
*He makes a "W" with both his hands multiple times, while saying syllables of his name. This taunt is faster in Ultimate.
*Wario can also taunt on his bike, where he laughs with two hands outward in the "W" sign, then puts one down.

All of these Smash Taunts cannot be performed while someone is in Final Smash standby, or someone has a fully assembled Dragoon/Daybreak. A conversation can also be interrupted if the aforementioned conditions are met while the conversation is active. Smash Taunts also cannot be performed at all on the Final Destination or Battlefield variant.
Diddy Kong
Since Super Smash Bros. Brawl:
*Throws his cap in the air and catches it with his head.
*Moves his hands forward and lets out a taunting noise. This taunt is shorter in Ultimate.
*Dances around while clapping his hands.

Snake's Smash Taunt
Rosalina & Luma
The player must choose Snake and play Shadow Moses Island. Once in the stage, the player should do a split-second down taunt. Then, if he is not interrupted, he will establish communication with Roy Campbell, Mei Ling, or Otacon, who begin talking about the fighters, similar to how players are able to obtain information during boss fights using the radio in the Metal Gear Solid series. If the player does this while playing against Falco, they will establish communication with Slippy Toad from the Star Fox series. If more than one opponent is taking part in the match, the game will select one to talk about at random. If Snake is KO'd during a conversation, the person on the other end will shout Snake's name, similar to during the Game Over screens of the Metal Gear Solid series.
Since Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U:
*Spins like a planet on its axis.
*Waves her wand up and down, saying "Mmm hmm!" while the Luma nods.
*Bends down and twirls her wand while coming up. The Luma spins and twirls in accordance. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the Luma makes noise.

For a complete list of Snake's conversations, see here.
Bowser Jr./Koopalings
Since Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U:
*Blows a fireball while laughing.
*Waves his hammer above his head. In Ultimate, the Koopalings use their wands from New Super Mario Bros. Wii instead of a hammer.
*Spins using the Junior Clown Car's "kart mode."

Star Fox Smash Taunt
Daisy
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate:

*Raises her fist while saying "Woohoo!" Resembles her official artwork.
In this one, the player must choose Fox, Falco, or Wolf, select the Lylat Cruise stage and do a split-second down taunt.
*Twirls around, then performs a V sign while saying "Yeah!"
*Places her hands on her hips while uttering a grunt. Resembles her artwork from Itadaki Street DS and Mario Kart 7.

After the spaceship warps to the next location, a conversation that matches the background begins. There are five background variations, so there are five types of communications per character.
King K. Rool
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate:
*Snarls four times in succession while facing the foreground.
*Taps his belly. Notably, this taunt triggers K. Rool's distinctive super armor mechanic used by several of his attacks, such as his side tilt attack and neutral air attack.
*Puts his hands on his knees and sinisterly stomps with one foot.

The characters who make appearances here are Fox, Falco, Peppy, Slippy, Krystal, Wolf, Leon, and Panther.
Piranha Plant
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate:
*Retracts into its pot/Warp Pipe before poking out. Reminiscent of how Piranha Plants behave in 2D platformers.
*Performs four empty bites in succession, grinning after the final one.
*Twirls.

Because the dialog is staged as if allies are observing the fight from the spaceship, the communication always excludes the one who is engaged in the fight. Strangely, whenever Wolf uses his Smash Taunt, Fox never appears in any of his conversations, while Falco does.
Smash Taunts
Smash Taunting is a taunt available only to Snake, Pit, and the Star Fox characters, triggering a conversation with the character's in-universe allies. To activate it, the player must execute a down taunt for one frame; however, the taunt only works on specific stages when the player is controlling a specific character.

In the Super Smash Bros. Melee Corneria stage, the player can start the same set of communications that existed in the previous version of the stage; however, as only Fox and Falco could initiate these communications in Super Smash Bros. Melee, only Fox and Falco can initiate these communications in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as well.

Here, Pit, Palutena and Viridi talk about the characters who is fighting in the match. Chrom will also appear if Robin is Pit's opponent, or Dark Pit will join the conversation if he is the opponent. If more than one opponent is in the match, the game will select one to talk about at random.

If Snake is KO'd during a conversation, it will be cut short with the person on the other end shouting Snake's name, similar to the Game Over screens of the Metal Gear Solid series. Characters that were not playable in Super Smash Bros. Brawl do not have a codec conversation, so Dr. Mario, Rosalina, Bowser Jr., Daisy, Piranha Plant, and King K. Rool do not have these.

Taunts in Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour.

Mario Party series[edit]

Mario Party 6[edit]

In Mario Party 6, the taunts for each character can be bought individually with Stars at the Star Bank. Pressing the L Button button on the GameCube Controller causes the player's character to taunt during Party Mode. The voice clips heard vary by character.

Mario Party 7[edit]

In Mario Party 7, there is an unlockable feature known as "Annoy Mode", which causes the player's character to taunt during Party Mode when they press the L Button button on the GameCube Controller. The voice clips heard vary by character, and most of them are reused from Mario Party 6. To unlock it, the player must purchase it for 500 Cruise Mileage Points at the Duty-Free Shop.

Mario Party 8[edit]

In Mario Party 8, there is an unlockable feature known as "Heckling Voices", which causes the player's character to taunt during Party Mode when they shake the Wii Remote. The voice clips heard vary by character, but each character has two voice clips. One voice clip known as "Boo" can be heard in the Carnival Calliope Character Voices. Heckling Voices costs fifty Carnival Cards at the Fun Bazaar.

List of taunts by Super Mario franchise characters in the Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

Screenshot of Princess Peach doing her taunt in Super Smash Bros. Melee

Mario[edit]

  • All installments prior to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: He grows twice his size (while the classic "power-up" sound effect plays) for a brief moment, then shrinks to normal (while the classic "damage" sound effect plays). A reference to his stance in Super Mario Bros.
    • In Ultimate: His Super Mario Bros. taunt is replaced by him making a thumbs-up gesture with a sound effect. Resembles a Club Nintendo artwork.
  • Since Super Smash Bros. Brawl:

Donkey Kong[edit]

  • All installments: Donkey Kong looks to the camera, shrugging his shoulders and letting out a grunt.
  • Since Super Smash Bros. Brawl:
    • He rapidly pounds his chest with his fists. This taunt is faster in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
    • He shakes his fur, as if he was wet. This taunt is faster in Ultimate.

Yoshi[edit]

  • All games: Yoshi waves his arms and shouts, "Yoshi!"
  • Since Brawl:
    • A dance that ends with "Yoshi!" The taunt is slightly shorter in Ultimate.
    • He chases his tail.

Luigi[edit]

  • All games: Luigi looks downwards with his hands behind his back, and kicks towards the floor. If a player is standing in front of Luigi during this process, the kick does 1% damage.
  • Since Super Smash Bros. Brawl:
    • Strikes multiple stand-still poses: he shows two fingers, then he smiles while he is pointing, then he thinks with his finger under his nose, then he looks in a corner, then he takes fright.
    • Belly flops onto the ground then bounces back to his feet. Similar to his victory pose from Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Bowser[edit]

  • Since Melee: Bowser roars, turning his head back, his claws extended.
  • Since Brawl:
    • Bites 5 times. The taunt is faster in Ultimate.
    • Dances on one foot.

Peach[edit]

  • Since Super Smash Bros. Melee: Winks and points to the camera, exclaiming, "Sweet!" Since Brawl, the exclamation is changed to "Uh-huh!". In Ultimate, the spinning animation has been removed, and it now has a heart effect.
  • Since Brawl:
    • Takes her parasol out and spins it, saying "Sweet!"
    • Dances in a taunting manner while holding her dress, singing "Lalalalala..." as she does this. This taunt is faster in Ultimate, with the voice changed to fit the speed.

Dr. Mario[edit]

  • Since Super Smash Bros. Melee: Dr. Mario tosses a Megavitamin of a random color, then grabs it in mid-air.
  • Since Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U:
    • Grinds his shoe on the ground.
    • Pats his shoulder.

Wario[edit]

Since Super Smash Bros. Brawl:

  • He laughs, drops his jaw, then pushes it up.
  • He shakes his rear at the camera, while making taunting sounds.
  • He makes a "W" with both his hands multiple times, while saying syllables of his name. This taunt is faster in Ultimate.
  • Wario can also taunt on his bike, where he laughs with two hands outward in the "W" sign, then puts one down.

Diddy Kong[edit]

Since Super Smash Bros. Brawl:

  • Throws his cap in the air and catches it with his head.
  • Moves his hands forward and lets out a taunting noise. This taunt is shorter in Ultimate.
  • Dances around while clapping his hands.

Rosalina & Luma[edit]

Since Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U:

  • Spins like a planet on its axis.
  • Waves her wand up and down, saying "Mmm hmm!" while the Luma nods.
  • Bends down and twirls her wand while coming up. The Luma spins and twirls in accordance. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the Luma makes noise.

Bowser Jr./Koopalings[edit]

Since Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U:

  • Blows a fireball while laughing.
  • Waves his hammer above his head. In Ultimate, the Koopalings use their wands from New Super Mario Bros. Wii instead of a hammer.
  • Spins using the Junior Clown Car's "kart mode."

Daisy[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate:

King K. Rool[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate:

  • Snarls four times in succession while facing the foreground.
  • Taps his belly. Notably, this taunt triggers K. Rool's distinctive super armor mechanic used by several of his attacks, such as his side tilt attack and neutral air attack.
  • Puts his hands on his knees and sinisterly stomps with one foot.

Piranha Plant[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate:

  • Retracts into its pot/Warp Pipe before poking out. Reminiscent of how Piranha Plants behave in 2D platformers.
  • Performs four empty bites in succession, grinning after the final one.
  • Twirls.

Smash Taunts[edit]

Snake and Otacon comment on Diddy Kong during a Smash Taunt in Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Smash Taunting is a taunt available only to Snake, Pit, and the Star Fox characters, triggering a conversation with the character's in-universe allies. To activate it, the player must execute a down taunt for one frame; however, the taunt only works on specific stages when the player is controlling a specific character.

The below is a brief overview of taunts affecting various Super Mario fighters.

Snake's Smash Taunt[edit]

See also: List of Snake's codec conversations

The player must choose Snake and play Shadow Moses Island. Once in the stage, the player should do a split-second down taunt. Then, if he is not interrupted, he will establish communication with Roy Campbell, Mei Ling, or Otacon, who begins talking about the fighters, with conversations about Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, Bowser, Peach, Wario, and Diddy Kong included, similar to how players are able to obtain information during boss fights using the radio in the Metal Gear Solid series.

Pit's Smash Taunt[edit]

See also: List of Palutena's Guidance conversations

The player must choose Pit and play as him in Palutena's Temple; here, Pit can call Palutena and Viridi by using a Smash Taunt known as Palutena's Guidance. They talk about the characters who are fighting in the match, including Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, Bowser, Peach, Wario, Diddy Kong, Dr. Mario, Rosalina, Bowser Jr., Daisy, King K. Rool, and Piranha Plant. If more than one opponent is in the match, the game will select one to talk about at random.

Mario Golf series[edit]

Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour[edit]

Characters can taunt or cheer for the player in Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour by using Control Stick for taunting and C Stick for cheering; however, they must not be using the same controller. This does not directly affect gameplay, but the quotes on the screen and the voices can provide a distraction for the player.

Mario Golf: Advance Tour[edit]

Just like its console counterpart, characters can taunt or cheer (called supports in this game) for players in Mario Golf: Advance Tour by using +Control Pad for taunting and A Button, B Button, L Button, and R Button for cheering. All characters except your main character will use their Birdie lines for their supports and use their bogey lines for their taunts. Mario, Peach, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Luigi, Bowser, Waluigi, Wario, Neil, and Ella reuse their cheer and taunt lines from Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour. In addition, players can customize the taunts for Neil or Ella by going to the Taunt and Support Editor in the Options mode.

Mario Power Tennis[edit]

Mario Power Tennis
