While growing, Mega Goomba makes a sound similar to touching a Mega Mushroom.

Before the battle, a seemingly regular Goomba transforms into a Mega Goomba. Mario must defeat this boss to aquire the key that provides access to World 5.
To defeat the Mega Goomba, Mario (or Luigi) can either activate a ? Switch, causing two platforms to appear that elevate when Mario stands on them, or Wall Jump off the side wall when the Goomba comes close. Either way, Mario has to ground-pound the Mega Goomba afterwards to damage it. Alternatively, Mega Mario, Shell Mario's Shell Dash technique, or Fire Mario's fireballs can also damage Mega Goomba. If the Mega Goomba approaches Mario on the far left or right side, it does not hurt him due to its mushroom-sized hitbox. It takes three ground-pounds to defeat the Mega Goomba, or nine if Mario is in his Mini form. When Mega Goomba is defeated, the key to World 5 is released.

To defeat Mega Goomba, Mario can activate a switch, causing two platforms to appear. When Mario stands on the platform, it will elevate in the air. From there, Mario can either Wall Jump,  Jump, or Ground Pound directly on top of the Mega Goomba. For the attack to be successful, Mario must Ground Pound the Goomba (unless he is Mega Mario). Mario can also go off to the side, simply wall jump, then ground pound on the Mega Goomba.
In the very first footage of New Super Mario Bros., the Mega Goomba was a normal Goomba until it came into contact with a mushroom. A similar concept was later used for the Mega Koopa in Super Paper Mario.

Once Mario hits the Mega Goomba three times, the Goomba will be defeated, and Mario can get the key to World 5.
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the Mega Goomba is mentioned in the Giant Goomba's trophy description.

The Mega Goomba also appears in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. However, the Mega Goombas in that game are nowhere near as gigantic as the one from New Super Mario Bros., but they are still bigger than Mario. When jumped on, it splits into two Grand Goombas.

*This Goomba originated in the very first previews of New Super Mario Bros. (or Super Mario Bros. DS, as it was called back then), in which it was a normal-level enemy Goomba until it came in contact with a Mega Mushroom. This made the normal Goomba grow to the enormous size of the current Mega Goomba. This new and innovative feature was taken out for unknown reasons, possibly due to the fact that the game would become extremely hard if certain enemies became large.

The Mega Goomba[1][2] is the boss of World 4 in New Super Mario Bros. Mega Goomba is fought in World 4-Castle. Just before the battle starts, Mega Goomba is first shown to be a regular Goomba, and it walks onscreen before transforming into the Mega Goomba. While growing, Mega Goomba makes a sound similar to touching a Mega Mushroom.

In the very first footage of New Super Mario Bros., the Mega Goomba was a normal Goomba until it came into contact with a mushroom. A similar concept was later used for the Mega Koopa in Super Paper Mario.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the Mega Goomba is mentioned in the Giant Goomba's trophy description.
