Chinchos[1] are undead enemies encountered in Super Mario Odyssey. They are short, mummy-type enemies, with a skull for a head and their eyes in the shape of stars; as such, they are undead dark purple Tostarenans, as proven by their Japanese name, despite Tostarenans already being skeletal.
History[edit]
Super Mario Odyssey[edit]
In Super Mario Odyssey, Chinchos can be found in the Sand Kingdom, Wooded Kingdom, Seaside Kingdom, Ruined Kingdom, and Mushroom Kingdom. They appear mainly in dark areas such as sub-areas, so they generally are not present during the daytime. They appear by rising out from the ground, usually in large groups. They run after Mario, with a level of imprecision to their turning. To defeat them, Mario must jump on them; if they only receive a hit from Cappy, they are stunned for a short time and quickly heal the damage. Mario does not bounce off of Chinchos. They can also be defeated if charged at while riding Jaxi, capturing a Chargin' Chuck, or throwing objects at them. Even holding an object while walking into a Chincho counts, but Mario will drop it. If Mario goes away, or spends long enough around them, Chincho usually burrow back into the ground.
During The Hole in the Desert, an objective in the Sand Kingdom, night has fallen in the area and Chinchos roam the surface. Only four Chinchos appear at a time, but as long as Mario is close to the sand more will appear. Their presence scares the Tostareans. Once the objective is complete, the Sand Kingdom returns to daytime and Chinchos do not appear this way. However, they now appear in the Deepest Underground, in the arena where Knucklotec was initially fought.
Chinchos appear if the player opens chests tied to Treasure Trap Power Moons in an incorrect order. They appear in place of the chests as the game reveals the correct order. These Chincho do not despawn. To make the chests reappear, all of the Chincho must be defeated, or the room can be reloaded.
In two areas, the player can find a glowing Chincho. Defeating the glowing Chincho will give Mario a Power Moon. One of them is in the arena in the Deepest Underground, rewarding the "Under the Mummy's Curse" Power Moon The other is in a sub-area of the Ruined Kingdom, and rewards the "The Mummy Army's Curse" Power Moon. They might not appear immediately, and may burrow back into the ground if not defeated fast enough, but they do come back.
Chincho also appear in the Knucklotec rematch in the Mushroom Kingdom, appearing from the ground throughout the fight starting from when Knucklotec first throws his fists across the platform.
Minecraft[edit]
In the Super Mario Mash-up in Minecraft, Drowned are replaced by Chinchos.
Concept and creation[edit]
The Chinchos were designed with slightly different eyes compared to those of the Tostarenans.[2] The concept art reveals that they are meant to be dark purple-colored Tostarenans covered by bandages. Their name appears to have been inspired by the Chinchorro mummies.
