Omochao is a Chao-shaped robot from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. The only times when he has appeared in the Super Mario franchise is the Mario & Sonic series, having varying roles. Omochao usually appears in various places throughout the game to provide the player with advice and information. Omochao's name is a portmanteau of the Japanese word「おもちゃ」(omocha), meaning "toy", and "Chao".

Omochao has had several background appearances in the Mario & Sonic series, most commonly as an audience member. In both the Wii version and Nintendo DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, Omochao appears in the crowd for most of the events. He is also an audience members in the sequels: the Wii version and the Nintendo DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games; the Wii version and Nintendo 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games; Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games; the Wii U version of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games; and in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. Some of Omochao's other cameo appearances include the opening cutscene of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games for the Wii, in an unlockable picture of various non-playable characters in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games for the Nintendo DS, and as an obtainable badge from the badge machine in the Nintendo 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The first time when Omochao has his signature role of providing the player with advice is in the Nintendo DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games's Adventure Tours mode. Here, Omochao can be found in various crates and barrels in each area, sometimes multiple times, and talking to him after this will allow the player to ask him for hints and information to help them progress through the mode. In the Nintendo 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, Omochao appears in the 20km Race Walk, Omnium and Triathlon Events to provide the player with hints and information about the respective event.

In the Nintendo 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games's Story mode, Omochao initially helps Mario, Luigi and Toad investigate the Phantasmal Fog at the Main Stadium, where he remains to help. He later appears when the fog has been cleared and when the rainbow-colored fog begins setting in to help clear it up, and supports Mario, Luigi, Sonic and Tails when they take on Bowser and Dr. Eggman. Omochao makes an appearance at the opening ceremony, as well as in the picture shown at the end of the credits, and also makes a final appearance where he is rescued from some of Dr. Eggman's robots by Bowser Jr., who he encourages to challenge Shadow and Silver.

Omochao has a role in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020's story mode. Here, several versions of him appear in the explorable Tokyo 2020 locations, and when talked to he provide the player with facts about the location and the Olympic Games, occasionally providing them with a piece of trivia as well.

Omochao has had some miscellaneous roles. He sometimes sends the player some mail in the Wii versions of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games and Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games respectively. Additionally, in the latter game's London Party mode, the player can talk to Omochao to play a minigame as well as obtain a sticker with him on. Omochao is a referee in Tennis (Singles) and Fencing - Epée as well as a host of the Party News event that occasionally happens in Party Mix medleys in the Nintendo 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games. He is a reporter when the player achieves a new record in an event in Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. In the Wii U version of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Omochao runs the Rio 2016 Item Stand at Copacabana Beach.
