History[edit]

Super Mario Sunshine[edit]

Main article: Delfino Airstrip Dilemma

Delfino Airstrip is the first area encountered in Super Mario Sunshine, and is the place where FLUDD is encountered as well as where the first Shine Sprite is encountered. It cannot be revisited until after the player gains access to Corona Mountain. After entering the mountain (it is not necessary to complete it; the player may simply pause the game and select "Exit Area" to leave), the player can pay ten coins to a Pianta at Delfino Plaza to ride a boat to the airstrip.

Episodes[edit]

# Image Episode Summary

1 Mario battles against a Gatekeeper at the Delfino Airstrip. Delfino Airstrip Dilemma This episode's objective is to find FLUDD and defeat the Proto Piranha at the airstrip.
2 Mario collecting red coins at the Delfino Airstrip Red Coin Waterworks This episode's objective is to find the eight red coins at the airstrip.

  • Turbo Nozzle
    • On the northwest edge of the airstrip, right of the Hover Nozzle. It does not appear during the first visit.
  • Hover Nozzle
    • On the northwest edge of the airstrip, left of the Turbo Nozzle.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

Delfino Airstrip only makes a small background appearance in the Super Smash Bros. series in the Delfino Plaza stage, which appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The airstrip's model seems to be largely simplified from its appearance in Super Mario Sunshine, in that it simply looks like a floating block in the ocean.

Music[edit]

Main article: Underground Theme

The "Delfino Airstrip" theme is an elongated arrangement of the "Underground Theme" from Super Mario Bros. played on strings and piano backed by tropical percussion. When the player returns to the airstrip, "Isle Delfino" plays instead.

Trivia[edit]

  • After completing the game and going back to the airstrip, the Guide Book will erroneously display Mario's location as being in Delfino Plaza. The airstrip is considered a submap of the plaza because its 100 Coin Shine is also the same as the 100-Coin Shine for Delfino Plaza. The Blue Coin on the airstrip is also counted as part of Delfino Plaza's Blue Coin count.
  • Through an elaborate glitch, it is possible for Mario to have the Turbo Nozzle when playing Delfino Airstrip for the first time. If he attempts to bust down the wooden doors this way, the game crashes.[2]
