“Go! Attack, Stilt Guys! Fight! Fight! Fight!”
General Guy, Paper Mario

Stilt Guys[1], also known as Shy-Guys on Stilts[2], are a species of Shy Guys that walk on stilts, which are mostly shoed with what look like large Shy Guy boots.

History

Yoshi franchise

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island / Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3

Stilt Guys first appeared in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. The sixth level in World 1 is named after them and shows off many different colored versions. Yoshi can lick them frontally, but this action will only bump them backwards. On the other hand, if licked from behind, the Stilt Guys will stick to Yoshi's tongue and get inside his mouth, after which they can be transformed into Yoshi Eggs. Bumping Stilt Guys into water will cause them to sink, but if the water is shallow they will slowly walk on the bottom of the water's bed and emerge on the shore. If they are stomped on, they lose their stilts, leaving them no choice but to walk with their feet.

Yoshi's Story

Stilt Guys also appeared in Yoshi's Story. Like in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Yoshi had to land on their heads to make them fall off their stilts, leaving them no choice once again.

Yoshi's Island DS

The Stilt Guys also appear in Yoshi's Island DS, along with Big Guy the Stilted, a giant, mechanical Stilt Guy boss. This game also introduces Stilts as an item that Yoshi can use for himself.

Yoshi's New Island

Several Stilt Guys stroll around Yarn Yoshi in Yoshi's Woolly World.

Stilt Guys are found in Yoshi's New Island too. Just like in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, when they are on their stilts and Yoshi attempts to lick their frontal side, they get pushed backwards. They need to be jumped on in order to lose their stilts and become run-of-the-mill Shy Guys. Better yet, Yoshi can eat them if he sticks his tongue onto their back sides.

Yoshi's Woolly World

Stilt Guys return in Yoshi's Woolly World. In order to keep the game's prime aesthetics, Stilt Guys are now crafted out of wool strings and walk on two long, thin weaving sticks, resembling stilts. In this game, the Stilt Guys' behavior is no different from that of Stilt Guys in past games; they can also be interacted with just as before. An addition to this interaction is marked by the fact that Yarn Yoshi can throw a yarn ball at the stilts of one of these enemies, as it unravels and wraps around them upon contact, generating the impossibility for the respective Stilt Guy to move. Yoshi can lick away the wool string formed around the stilts, or wait a certain time, before the Stilt Guys become able to move again. Tossing a yarn ball at the Shy Guy who controls the stilts will result in the enemy getting caged inside a tangled string, dropping its stilts and ultimately greeting defeat.

Paper Mario series

Stilt Guys also appeared in Paper Mario as part of the second division of Shy Guy Army that can be fought. After they are ordered by General Guy to fight against Mario and his friends, they walk towards the heroes and attempt to bounce on them with their long stilts. Nevertheless, the enemies might miss the characters. They lose the stilts if Mario jumps ontop of them; thereafter, they fall on the ground and lastly become normal Shy Guys.

Super Paper Mario contains unused graphical data of a Stilt Guy.
