Luncheon Kingdom

Template:SMO kingdom infobox The Luncheon Kingdom is the eleventh kingdom visited in Super Mario Odyssey. This location, inspired by Italy (or more specifically by Pompeii), is a combination of lava/volcano and food themes. It is the greater location of Mount Volbono, the volcano, and is inhabited by Volbonans. It is visited after both the Snow and Seaside Kingdoms have been visited. When Mario and Cappy first visit this kingdom, Bowser and the Broodals have stolen the Stupendous Stew as food for the wedding reception, and Spewart must be fought; after his defeat, Mario and Cappy must make their way to the remaining Stupendous Stew atop the volcano to pursue Cookatiel. However, they are blown off after the volcano erupts. Therefore, they must reach the pot a different way. After defeating Cookatiel, Mario and Cappy attempt to visit Bowser's Kingdom, but their journey is interrupted by Bowser and the Ruined Dragon, sending them crash-landing into the Ruined Kingdom.

Cooking with a Volcano

Surrounded by strange pink lava, Mount Volbono is colorful and vibrant, a vision straight from a picture book. It is famous for its cuisine, with dishes simmered over the volcano, and chock-full of the local produce that grows to enormous size thanks to the volcanic climate.

The Gates of a Gourmet Paradise

The Historic "Old Town"

On your way to Mount Volbono, you'll pass through the Old Town, ringed by the ruined wall that once enclosed the town. These sturdy, cut-stone walls even now suggest the prosperity of those times. Atop the walls are little mounds of salt, carried by the wind and piled up naturally. Visitors can walk along the tops of the walls—do so if you get a chance. The sights here are very different from the colorful scenery of Peronza Plaza, but equally breathtaking.

Cooking Carnival

The highlight of Mount Volbono's year is the Cooking Carnival, where visitors from all over the world come to sample the famous Stupendous Stew. While cooking on a volcano is of course a grand spectacle, the dish itself has a surprisingly delicate flavor, described most frequently in reviews as a "melty deliciousity."

A Resting Place for Meat

The giant slab of meat used in the Stupendous Stew is crusted generously in salt and left to rest on a high perch near the volcano. Aging the meat high above the lava, cooled by the wind, is essential to creating the core flavor. If you arrived before the Cooking Carnival, be sure to take the opportunity to visit the platform and see the meat resting soundly before its long journey.

Peronza Plaza

Be sure to visit the centrally located Peronza Plaza for a friendly welcome. Once among the colorful heaps of giant ingredients and succulent smells, you may find it hard to leave.

Cheese as Hard as Rock

The cheese in Mount Volbono is quite hard, likely because it is left near the lava and dries out completely. The locals chisel it with hammers—you're welcome to join!

Three Keys to the Kingdom

1. Sample the famous dish Stupendous Stew. It's what the locals eat.
2. Gape at exotic ingredients like gigantic vegetables and rock-hard cheeses.
3. Marvel at the preserved architecture, the best-kept secret in tourism.

Odyssey

Peronza Plaza

Main article: Peronza Plaza

A small town at the base of Mount Volbono. A Crazy Cap, a Slots house, and Talkatoo are found here. The Checkpoint Flag is at the entrance, just north of Spewart's battle arena.

Path to the Meat Plateau

This area is located in front of the Power Moon from the mission Under the Cheese Rocks and rises from the lava upon collecting it. At the start of the pathway, there is a Checkpoint Flag, and a hole in the ground with a Lava Bubble. Left to the Checkpoint Flag is several platforms with several Magmatos, Lava Bubbles, Fire Bros and two regional coins. To the right of the Checkpoint Flag is a tall structure with three regional coins, a crack that, when Ground Pounded, gives a batch of coins, four Hidden Blocks with one coin each and a Door which leads to a small room with a Power Moon. In front of the Checkpoint Flag is a small island with a Torch which, once it is set on fire with either a Lava Bubble or a Fire Bro, will give the player another Power Moon. In front of all the platforms is a tower that leads to the Meat Plateau. Behind the tower is a door and a set of Cheese Blocks that, when broken with a Hammer Bros frying pans reveals a golden turnip. Right of the tower is a Volbonan which can be captured to collect three regional coins. Finally, after beating the main game and opening the kingdom's Moon Rock, another crack can be found on the tall structure, which, when Ground Pounded, will give the player a Power Moon.

Meat Plateau

The Meat Plateau is at the far north of the kingdom. The plateau contains three ? Blocks and a pile of salt with a slab of meat. The third story mission's objective is to capture the meat and use it as bait so Cookatiel will carry Mario to the top of Mount Volbono. After completing the main story and activating the Luncheon Kingdom's Moon Rock, a Moon Pipe appears where the meat originally was.

Volcano Cave Entrance

This Checkpoint Flag is west of Peronza Plaza, near the entrance to the Volcano Cave. There is an 8-Bit Pipe which leads to a small platforming section with a Hammer Bro, several pools of lava with Lava Bubbles and several regional coins. After the 2D segment, there is a corn on the cob which can be rolled on to reach the entrance to the cave, and can also be used to get three regional coins. After the game is beaten and the Luncheon Kingdom's Moon Rock is activated, a Moon Pipe appears at the entrance.

Start of the Peak Climb

This Checkpoint Flag is found at the base of the mountain on its northern side, shortly after crossing a number of moving platforms with Piranha Plants. Mario is required to take this alternative path to the top of the mountain due to the regular route becoming blocked off after recovering the first Multi Moon. There is a Volbonan here who warns Mario about the rotating platforms just up ahead.

Top of the Peak Climb

This Checkpoint Flag is near the summit of Mount Volbono, near a small river of lava with two Lava Bubbles which must be captured to enter a lava cannon. The lava cannon transports the player to the pot of stew at the peak of the volcano, where the Cookatiel boss fight takes place.

Salt-Pile Isle

This small island is found in the middle of the lava southeast of Peronza Plaza. There is a Lava Bubble circling around it.

Remote Island in the Lava

This island is located in the northeast corner of the kingdom in a sea of lava. On the island, there a low platform with two ? Blocks and two Brick Blocks, and a panicked Volbonan who arrived on the island to fix all the cracks, but was interrupted by the falling peppers, and wishes that someone would get the job done. On the upper level, there is a hole that dispenses peppers, piles of salt and six cracks in the ground. Once the cracks are all Ground Pounded, the Volbonan gives Mario a Power Moon. On the left of the pepper-dispensing hole is an 8-Bit Pipe that transports Mario to an 8-bit section with several Hammer Bros, Lava Bubbles shooting both upward and downward, a lift that transports Mario over lava, and another Power Moon.

Behind the hole, there is a painting which transports the player to Yoshi's House in the Mushroom Kingdom.

Floating Sky Island

Not to be confused with Island in the Sky.

The Floating Sky Island is accessed by entering a painting found in either the Lake Kingdom or the Wooded Kingdom, depending on which kingdom the player chooses to go to first; the one that was visited second will contain the painting leading here. The Secret Path to Mount Volbono! Power Moon is found here. Outside of glitches and other unintended exploits, this island is the only area accessible in the Luncheon Kingdom before the player visits the Snow Kingdom and Seaside Kingdom.

Objectives

1. The Broodals Are After Some Cookin': The goal is to defeat Spewart in front of the entrance to Peronza Plaza.
2. Under the Cheese Rocks: The goal is to locate the Lever Switch hidden in the cheese rocks that opens a cage containing a Power Moon.
3. Big Pot on the Volcano: Dive In!: The goal is to reach the large pot on top of Mount Volbono.
4. Climb Up the Cascading Magma: After Mario is launched off Mount Volbono's summit from its eruption, he must reach the end of the volcano cave located on the west side of the kingdom.
5. Cookatiel Showdown!: After exiting the volcano cave, Mario must once again reach the pot on Mount Volbono and defeat Cookatiel.

Paintings

The painting that leads to the Mushroom Kingdom

There are two paintings in this kingdom. One is located at the back of the Remote Island in the Lava. It takes the player to Yoshi's House at the Mushroom Kingdom, and it can be accessed after collecting the "Under the Cheese Rocks" Power Moon.

The other painting is located at the Floating Sky Island and can only be accessed from a painting at the Wooded Kingdom or the Lake Kingdom, depending on which kingdom the player first visited later.

Power Moons

The Luncheon Kingdom has cyan Power Moons.

There are a total of 72 Power Moons (66 regular Power Moons and 2 Multi Moons) in this Kingdom. During the player's first visit to this kingdom, they can collect 45 Power Moons and the 2 Multi Moons, including one from the kingdom's Hint Art. The player can also collect a Power Moon if they travel to this kingdom using a painting found in a previous kingdom (either the Lake Kingdom or Wooded Kingdom). One additional Power Moon can also be found when the player encounters the Tostarenan tourist in the kingdom (after he has visited all other locations). After the player defeats Bowser in the Moon Kingdom, 7 more Power Moons become available to collect. The Moon Rock will also be available to destroy, causing 12 additional Power Moons to be accessible.

In order to progress to the next kingdom, the player must collect at least 18 Power Moons.

There are a total of 100 regional coins, which take the form of polygonal tomatoes, to be found in the Luncheon Kingdom: 9 coins near the starting area, 18 near Peronza Plaza, 12 near Salt Pile Isle, 15 near Path to the Meat Plateau, 6 near Meat Plateau, 17 near Volcano Cave Entrance, 7 near Start of the Peak Climb, 3 near Top of the Peak Climb, 13 near Remote Island in the Lava.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker

Main article: Cookatiel's Sizzling Sprint

A new level inspired by the Luncheon Kingdom appears in the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Switch versions of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. Cookatiel appears an enemy in the level, spitting durians at the player. Double Cherries also appear in the level.

Trivia

• The player could have used precision platforming from the Floating Sky Island to reach the Luncheon Kingdom early on in the game. This was eventually fixed, and Mario is now brought back up to the island in a bubble if this is attempted.
