Super Mario Advance is a game for the Game Boy Advance. It is the first of the Super Mario Advance series.

Super Mario 2

The game's main feature is a remake of the NES game Super Mario Bros. 2, called in this game Super Mario 2. Some changes from the original are the following:

  • The graphics resemble the Super Mario All-Stars version of the game.
  • Voices for Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Toad, and the bosses were added.
  • The game can be saved every level.
  • A circular character select screen is shown, instead of Mario,Luigi, Peach, and Toad having to line up in a row.
  • A point system has been added. Players get more points for making one thrown object hit lots of enemies. If enough enemies are hit, an extra life will be awarded.
  • Hearts appear much more frequently than in the original. Whenever three or more vegetables or enemies are involved in a collision, a heart appears. Also, hearts can be pulled out of the ground.
  • Giant Vegetables have been added to the game. These voluminous vegetables take a long time to pull out of the ground, but function normally otherwise (apart from having a larger area to hit enemies with).

  • Robirdo replaces Mouser as the boss of World 3.

Mario Bros.

As in all of the Super Mario Advance series, a side feature in the game is a remake of the classic Mario Bros. The remake features enhanced graphics and sound, and Mario's traction is better. Shellcreepers have been replaced with Spinies.

There are also two multiplayer modes, for both of which only one Game Pak is needed. One version, called Super Mario Bros. Classic, is like the multiplayer version of Mario Bros., except up to four players can play.

The other mode is Super Mario Bros. Battle, and it is also like Mario Bros., although highly modified. There is no cooperative aspect to this mode. Players win when they get five coins, and coins are produced when an enemy is defeated. Players can pick each other up and throw each other. A notable addition is the trash can, which appears with two players only. If thrown into the trash can, a player is stuck there for a few seconds. When they come out, they have an item that will help them in the game, however. The items are the following:

  • Fishbone - Does nothing.
  • Koopa Shell - When thrown, it defeats enemies and hurts players.
  • POW Block - Stuns all players and enemies on the ground.
  • Egg - When thrown, this hatches into one of three items:
    • Starman - Makes the player invincible for a limited amount of time. Touch enemies to defeat them, and touch players to shrink or defeat them.
    • Coin - Get five of these to win. They also appear when enemies are defeated.
    • Heart - If Mario collects this, he becomes Super Mario again.
