Metal Sonic is an evil robotic version of Sonic from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, created by Dr. Eggman. As with Knuckles and Shadow, he is one of Sonic's rivals, and despite being a robotic copy of the original, he believes that he is the one that deserves to be the real Sonic.

Metal Sonic's only appearances in the Super Mario franchise are in the Mario & Sonic series, where he first appears in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, as well as in all later games of the series. Shortly beforehand, Metal Sonic made his first Super Mario-related appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, although only as a cameo appearance.

While Metal Sonic was voiced in Sonic Heroes by Ryan Drummond, Sonic's voice actor at the time of the game's release, in the Mario & Sonic series, he uses computer-generated sound effects instead.

History[edit]

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

Metal Sonic makes a few cameo appearances in the Super Smash Bros. series in the form of collectible items. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, there is a collectible sticker of him. In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, there is a trophy of him. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, there is a spirit of Metal Sonic.

Mario & Sonic series[edit]

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games[edit]

Metal Sonic snowboarding in the DS version

Metal Sonic's first playable appearance is in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games. He is a Speed type character and is naturally good in all racing events. His special skill is the Air Boost. There is an added detail in the Nintendo DS version, in which Metal Sonic's eyes turn blue if the player wins an event, is in the lead, or is playing certain events. This appears to be a reference to Sonic R, in which a similar effect happens to Metal Sonic when he is in the lead and/or wins.

In the Adventure Tours mode of the Nintendo DS version, he tries to stalk Mario & Sonic in Sparkleton and challenges them to a Rocket Ski Jumping event. If they win, Metal Sonic will let them proceed.

Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games[edit]

Metal Sonic returns as a Speed-type playable character in the Wii version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, and appears in the opening alongside the other athletes in addition to competing in Badminton - Doubles and Football. A Mii outfit based on Metal Sonic can be collected for Miis to wear, and Metal Sonic appears as a character that can be spoken to in London Party mode in order to play minigames and earn stickers.

In the Nintendo 3DS version, Metal Sonic is included in the Tricksters group, meaning that he is only playable in certain Events. In the Story Mode, Metal Sonic first appears when he accidentally breaks Waluigi's binoculars, and after being defeated in an event by Waluigi, he runs away. He is encountered again alongside Dr. Eggman by Wario and Waluigi, who defeat them and destroy the fog machine before tying to get some compensation. Metal Sonic also appears in the bonus episodes, where after losing a match to Dr. Eggman, a challenge with Waluigi is set up so that Dr. Eggman can work out the modifications he requires. Another match for Metal Sonic is then set up with Wario, who gives Dr. Eggman the fog urn when Metal Sonic wins, which Metal Sonic brings back to the lab for him. Back at the lab, Metal Sonic watches Dr. Eggman unseal the urn and release Phantasmal Fog, and prepares to challenge the imposter of Sonic that forms, though Dr. Eggman faces him instead. After Dr. Eggman defeats the imposter, Metal Sonic listens to the explanation he gives of how it was formed. A badge of Metal Sonic can also be obtained from the badge machine.
