- —Grate Guy, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
Grate Guy is a boss in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and its remake, and the younger brother of Knife Guy. Both seemingly work as entertainers and bodyguards for Booster. They ambush Mario and company on the balcony of Booster Tower to protect Booster, who has fled to Marrymore with Peach.
In battle, Grate Guy is a magic user; each turn, he will either attack directly, use Echofinder to Mute a target (preventing it from using magic), or put the target to Sleep.
After several turns, the two will team up, and Knife Guy will stand on Grate Guy's head. They are still considered separate targets during this time. During this phase, each turn Grate Guy will use Meteor Blast, inflicting strong damage to the party.
The length of this phase is determined by both a hidden counter and the HP of the brothers. Each time Grate Guy takes damage, the counter is increased by 1, and each time he uses Meteor Blast, the counter is increased by 2. If either Knife or Grate Guy is defeated, or the counter reaches at least 5, they will separate and return to their first phase. As Grate Guy has 200 more HP than Knife Guy, it is more efficient to defeat him second to limit the number and duration of team-up phases.
After their defeat, both brothers decide to split up, with Grate Guy opening up Grate Guy's Casino. The entrance to the casino is well-hidden in the underground of Bean Valley. If Mario and company have a Bright Card, which they can win from Knife Guy in Booster Tower, they are considered members, and allowed to enter.
Inside, Grate Guy can play a game with Mario called "Look the other way". To play, Mario must guess which way Grate Guy will look, and look the other way. If Mario wins, he will be usually be rewarded with subpar prizes such as a Rotten Mush, Wilt Shroom, or Moldy Mush, although he will occasionally receive rare items such as Red Essences and Croaka Colas. If Mario wins this game one hundred times, he will be rewarded with the Star Egg, a powerful item.
