The Sound Player highlighted in the menu

The Sound Player is the sound test feature in the Nintendo Switch version of Super Mario RPG, located in the Journal sub-menu after clearing the game. It shows a playlist of the game's soundtrack and allows the player to listen to music from the game in both their Modern versions and their Classic versions from the original game. The Modern versions of tracks 46-48 remain locked until the player beats Culex 3D at least once.

Title Notes Length (Modern) Length (Classic) Original Sound Box liner notes
#01 Fun Adventure, Cheerful Adventure Plays on the title half of the intro video. 3:39 3:37 I wanted to write a song to get you excited for whatever fantastic adventure awaits you. The beat starts out bouncy, to go with Mario's jumps, but ends on a rather foreboding note...
#02 Let's Try! Plays on the file select screen. Rearrangement of "Ground BGM" from Super Mario Bros. and the name registration theme from VS. Super Mario Bros. by Koji Kondo. 2:16 1:05 I knew from the get-go what I wanted the pre-chorus for this track to be. It really laid out how I was going to include music from the original Mario series into the soundtrack.
#03 In the Flower Garden Plays on the prologue half of the intro video. Partial rearrangement of "World 1 Map (Grass Land)" from Super Mario Bros. 3 by Koji Kondo. 0:37 0:30 This track begins with an arrangement of "Grass Land", the World 1 theme from Super Mario Brothers 3. I remember when I first played through the scene of Peach picking flowers, I thought the music matched perfectly! (Not to toot my own horn. LOL)
#04 Bowser's Keep (First Visit) Plays the first time Bowser's Keep is visited. 1:57 0:38 My aim for this song was to invoke that typical "evil villain's lair" atmosphere you encounter in RPGs, while also creating something that still felt musically at home in the Mario universe.
#05 Battling Bowser Plays during the boss fight with Bowser. Rearrangement of "King of the Koopas" from Super Mario Bros. 3 by Koji Kondo. 1:48 1:00 While arranging the soundtracks for the Switch version, I listened to the original as I worked. There are some synth instruments that are hard to replicate on modern devices, and this song featured one of those. But I was careful to select instruments that still resembled the original!
#06 The Sword That Scattered the Stars Plays during the cutscene when Exor falls down into Bowser's Keep. 0:49 0:42 I tried my best to not make the remastered soundtrack too grand, since I thought it would clash with the game's overall tone. However, I was expressly requested to make this one song sound as magnificent as possible. Ask and ye shall receive! (LOL)
#07 Super Mario House Plays at Mario's Pad. Rearrangement of "World 1 Map (Grass Land)" from Super Mario Bros. 3 and "Ground BGM" from Super Mario Bros. by Koji Kondo. 1:43 1:33 I knew I wanted to feature that famous Mario tune as the main melody for this track, since it plays in his house. Then I wondered if there was another melody I could include here that had that same Mario flair. Immediately, "World 1 Map (Grass Land)," the Grass Land theme from Super Mario Brothers 3, was what came to mind.
#08 Where To? Plays on the world map. 3:53 0:37 My goal was to make this piece feel pensive, like you're pondering where to head next. The original track was rather short, so I tried to make the Switch version a smidge longer, but I got a bit heavy-handed. Embellishing pre-existing musical phrases is so much fun, I can't help it!
#09 Danger Abounds on the Journey Plays in Mushroom Way, the overworld outside of Kero Sewers, Rose Way, the overworld outside of the Pipe Vault, Booster Pass, outside of Booster Tower, and Land's End. 1:43 1:39 While writing the music for the original game, a colleague told me that when Nobuo Uematsu listened to this track and saw the data for it, he was impressed. Hearing that made me felt so accomplished! Getting it to sound just like I envisioned was a challenge due to sound channel limitations, but it was absolutely worth it.
#10 Battling Monsters Plays during normal battles. 2:30 1:12 This is the music that plays during standard battles, so I wanted to make it bright and cheerful to keep you entertained as you played. The Switch version is a bit longer than the original, due to the key change in the middle. I think it adds to the excitement!
#11 Victory! Plays after winning most battles and on the level-up screen. 0:31 0:26 Players have likely noticed that, in the original Super Mario RPG, the orchestra hit (the short BAM! noise) plays right as Mario holds up a peace sign. I was actually the one who suggested that! They were off synch during development, so I said why not make the motion and the audio line up! The orchestra hit lines up with Mario taking off his hat in the remake, too! I'm so glad ♡
#12 Hello, Happy Kingdom Plays in Mushroom Kingdom. 2:32 2:29
#13 Let Me Explain! Plays when Mario explains a situation to NPCs. 0:25 0:18

#18 The Weapons Show Up Plays in areas invaded by the Smithy Gang. 1:58 1:30

#20 Got a Star Piece! Plays when collecting a Star Piece. 0:36 0:41
