“Those moles are digging up our garden! It's just terrible!”
Star Bunny, Super Mario Galaxy

Undergrunts are mole-like creatures that appear in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. They seem to be a militaristic species, since their names refer to military ranks- Undergrunt, which usually means a low rank in the military (Undergrunts are the "minions" of the species). Major Burrows and Undergrunt Gunners also use military terms in their names.

History

Super Mario Galaxy

In Super Mario Galaxy, Undergrunts appear in Gusty Garden Galaxy in the mission, "The Dirty Tricks of Major Burrows" as uncommon enemies on two planets. Even though the Undergrunts' helmets lack spikes on the top (though they do have spikes on the sides), Mario and Luigi are not able to safely jump on them. However, Undergrunts can be defeated by Ground Pounding near them, then spinning them after they have popped out. They give a Coin when defeated. Undergrunts also appear in the Gold Leaf Galaxy.

At the end of Gusty Garden Galaxy, there is a boss extremely similar to an Undergrunt in appearance, Major Burrows, who can be defeated in almost the same way.

Super Mario Galaxy 2

Only two Undergrunts appear in Super Mario Galaxy 2 on the Undergrunt Planet in Battle Belt Galaxy. They are defeated the same way as in the previous game. However, they give three Star Bits instead of a Coin when defeated.

In addition, Major Burrows reappears in Boss Blitz Galaxy.

Physical Appearance

An Undergrunt's appearance is similar to most mole like characters (Monty Moles, Rocky Wrenches etc.). They have dark brown fur, and light brown bellies, noses, and cheeks. Undergrunts also have yellow spiked helmets preventing the player from stomping or spinning the mole. This is the only indication of an Undergrunt beside the fact that they leave a dirt trail behind when they tunnel in the ground.
