Sliding blocks[1] are flat blocks in Super Mario Galaxy. They are a type of grounded ? Block that appears only on a planet in the Gold Leaf Galaxy, where they slide across the surface of the planet like hockey pucks. They can damage Mario (or Luigi) on impact, a unique attribute among blocks that are normally harmless. Striking one with a Ground Pound breaks the sliding block and releases an item.
