“Bianco Hills is a rather interesting place, huh? We have falling goop and all sorts of other oddities!”
Pianta, Super Mario Sunshine

Bianco Hills is a hilly and picturesque countryside region in the center of Isle Delfino and northwest of Delfino Plaza, which first appears in Super Mario Sunshine. It can be entered via the Rainbow M on the base of the Grand Pianta Statue in Delfino Plaza's Bianco Square, once the player defeats Shadow Mario for the first time. The name Bianco Hills contains the word "bianco", which is Italian for "white". The name of the level can be translated to "White Hills", which is probably a reference to the white colored houses, walls, and roads found in the area. The musical theme of Bianco Hills is similar to those of Gelato Beach, Delfino Plaza, and Ricco Harbor. However, it is in the style of European folk music, with prominent use of clarinet, flute, and oboe, accompanied by tambourine, castanets, and harp. It was composed by Koji Kondo.

In Mario Golf: Advance Tour, some of the Mushroom Tourney courses are very similar, and seem to be based on this area.

Layout

Bianco Hills consists of the Windmill Village inhabited by Piantas, the upper hilly area, and a large lake. In the center of Bianco Hills lies the Big Windmill, which is located at the end of the lake.

Mario will start in a sloped area with a brick path and three Piantas. If Yoshi is rescued, he will appear in his egg near the starting point. From the starting point of the level, Mario can turn around and jump onto the wall to look down and see both Delfino Plaza and Ricco Harbor, though an invisible wall prevents him from jumping down. Going up the path, the player will find the downward slope continuously being sprayed with water, which will refill F.L.U.D.D. and the player can slide down. The path will end at a river with a log in it the player can use to get across.

Beyond the river is the Windmill Village area filled with many buildings and windmills strung together with tightropes. Several Piantas are seen walking around the village, with the red female and the yellow male ones in the back capable of throwing Mario upward. Around the village are several Pokey Heads and there are several Poinks to the left of the village in some episodes. By using the walls or tightropes, Mario can climb onto the top of the houses; one of which has a large platform on top of it that can be turned by spraying the sail with F.L.U.D.D. If the Turbo Nozzle has been found near the entrance to The Secret of the Dirty Lake, its box will appear at the end of the large wall, and if the Rocket Nozzle is found during The Red Coins of the Lake, its box will appear on one of the buildings. Along the base of the wall next to the village are several Strollin' Stus. During Episode 5: Petey Piranha Strikes Back, Petey Piranha will be fought in the village after waking him up on a far platform above the village.

Crossing through the wall next to the village, either through the gate (which is closed during Episode 1), the large waterwheel, or by climbing over the wall entirely, will lead the player to the large lake and surrounding area. Many trees, Pokey Heads, and Seedy Pods are found in the grassy area and the ledges to the west of the lake contain a Pokey and several platforms that lead to Red Coins and the Shine Sprite for The Red Coins of the Lake. Following the path from the waterwheel will lead across a bridge and to the large windmill in the middle of the lake. The path to the windmill has many bends and gaps in it the player needs to jump or use the Hover Nozzle to cross. Platforms underneath the bridge are strung with tightropes that will lead the player to Episode 3: The Hillside Cave Secret. The lake itself has several Skeeters swimming on the surface. During Episode 6: The Secret of the Dirty Lake, the lake is polluted, so the player needs to use lily pads to get around.

Trivia

File:Isle Delfino slide 3.PNG
Bianco Hills as shown in the Super Mario Sunshine intro. Mario also can be seen in the lower right part of the image.
  • In all the languages besides Italian, the name uses "bianco" instead of the translation of "white".
  • Part of Bianco Hills can be seen during the opening sequence of Super Mario Sunshine, in the welcome video.
  • When Bianco Hills is shown in the opening sequence, Mario with F.L.U.D.D. can be seen in the lower right part of the screen, close to the lake, this being a development goof since Mario hasn't visited Isle Delfino yet and hasn't even met F.L.U.D.D. before landing on the island.
  • It is possible that the name of the mission "Petey Piranha Strikes Back" is a parody of the name of the movie Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back as well as the level's episode number, being the fifth episode.
